1, Dump old oil
2, Fill new oil to check plug level
pretty easy
some people take it for a run to warm the oil up so it drains a bit better, Id leave it for a couple of hours to drain, If you really want to get all the filings out then you can go a full rambo and remove the centre and wipe inside with clean rags.
theres no real tricks to it

Tip: Most diffs (atleast from my performance car experience) have a magnetic drain plug, this collects all the little bit of metal sludge crap on it, wipe that clean as well.
Next time you do the diff oil you can see how much stuff is on the plug, gives you a feel for whats going on inside the diff, ie how fact is it wearing.
I change my diff oil ever second oil change so there should be just about non of that crap on it.
engine oil + filter : every 5000kms or less
rear (and front if applicable, eg gt-r): every 10,000kms
gearbox : every 10,000kms (When driven hard, 6 speed getrag every 5000kms)
In the evo6 the right angle drive unit: every 5000kms witout fail !
And yet to destory a gearbox/diff etc in gtr/evo/gts-t, bit i did destroy syncros on 1st, second and 3rd, and 3rd gear on a sw20 mr2 (40,000kms only !) but toyota told me that it was a bad 3rd gear to start with.
Wowow what a ramble.... oh well you get that.

Hmm well I've been meaning to change mine for a while now, really should get off my ass and do it!
One question I have tho is will it help make my diff less noisy? At the moment my diff makes a little noise (is more like a rumbling) under slight load (at about 80kph), I'm guess in its the pinion gear but can I expect changing the oil to do anything to reduce the noise it does make?
Cheers

Is that almost the same as "throw in a banana peel into it.." sort of thing!
Does / will it really work? lol (sounds pretty stupid).

It'll work just as well as turning up the volume knob on your stereo - that'll fix the noise from the diff . Higher viscosity "oil" will lead to more friction (and heat - maybe a fire?), and not to mention more wear from the particles of sawdust.
Diffs only have a small reservoir of oil - so any metal bits floating about will not be diluted by the volume, and will circulate around again causing more wear.

Make sure to undo the siller plug first though... Cause If you can't undo it and the oil has already drained, then how do you expect to fill it up???
Helpful Hint Number 23 from Benny boy...
