Hi,
I have my 1j goin great, I have been thinkin of an upgrade in the way of a Haltech E6K aftermarket computer, bigger injectors, and bigger turbos, I have been thinkin of Twin Nissan VG30DET TO3 ball bearing turbochargers ,apparently they are good for 200kw's each, has anyone tried this setup? with these turbos, if so what type of power would it bring??, I am looking for around 550hp and the flywheel
can I get some thoughts on this please!!
Thanks in Advance
Dave

It'd be something interesting to try - I'd say it should bring the power you want, although the response may or may not be ideal. It's hard to say really until you try it! But 350kw at the wheels should be doable, if the turbo's don't crack the sads about being run with too much boost - I'd say you'd need to run something like 1.6+bar of pressure to achieve this, and the Nissan turbos may not like it. One way to find out I suppose!
The other option would be to do things Nizpro style - use a slightly old school plain bearing TO4, massive boost, and a pair of old Nissan blow off valves instead of a wastegate - all up it probably wouldn't cost THAT much more than the twin VG30 set up, would be more likely to work, but would defeat the whole purpose of trying something...

Hi,
Thanks for your replies!
A mate had a VG30DET with one of theses turbos on it, they are thinking of of hanging another off it,( which I think some guys with the VG30DETT do anyway) being a 3 litre, and I have heard the turbo get good reviews ( for a OE turbo), got me thinking of doing this type of upgrade on my 1J
Being fairly new to turbo's, I have to learn a thing or two ( where always learning), about how to match turbos to the engine etc, etc, I guess it's a matter of give it a go and find out!
Once again thanks for your thoughts!!
Regards
Dave

as a sort of related topic... how much room will a gt30 take up compared to the stock 1jz turbos? And how much lag can I expect?
the 1jz turbos dont have a whole lot of room in my ma61, so anything much bigger is going to create problems.
I could get the manifold made to sit the turbo further forward, but I'd prefer to avoid this if possible. (all I need is my tax return $$ to make it all come true )

The standard 1J turbos (and ESPECIALLY manifolds) are an exercise in space efficiency. This doesn't mean an exercise in flow efficiency though! To fit any kind of other turbo, especially twins, is going to require very careful measurement and fabrication if space is already tight.

a mate has fitted twin rb20 turbos with good results torque is amazing and power not too bad at all .
I think if you where going twin the bigger vg30 would be the way to go .especially as your running aftermarket ecu.
Having said that for the amount of work involved why not just do the garret roller job as already mentioned .
i think this is an excellent turbo choice for a 1j
however just a few small considerations.
when garret rate a turbo its usually based on a 2 litre engine so to get 500 h.p even on a high flowing engine like a 1j you will probably look at 20 psi+ to get it however it can be done
im currently fitting the 720 h.p gt3540 but im not expecting more than 450 at the wheels
if your running a toyota auto then dont expect it to handle 500 h.p . However if your running 1j manual box allow 20% power loss
so 400 should be possible .
BUT this is in a perfect world .Not trying to dampen your project at all i think its the only way to go .but dont be upset if you only make 350 at the wheels with a manual
what diff are you going to use as well as gearbox
the thing with a garret roller turbo is lag is not an issue . i have spoken to a soarer owner with the 550 h.p turbo fitted and boost response is about 500 rpm worse than factory .whack in a 3000 rpm stall and you get factory response and 380 h,p at the wheels at 18 psi

Hi,
Thanks for your replies!!,
i have often thought the vg30det turbo would be a good one for a twin setup on a 1J, yes making a manifold will be a pain in the arse, but what isn't doing this type of thing!,
WORLD RECORD,
yep no problem to keep you all updated, I had been planing to go to the US next month to start testing the boat, but he have secured sponsorship ( and major sponsorship being talk about now)to bring the jet boat out here to Australia over the next 2 months, and we will be starting our test program on the manning river at taree( its good enough to get up around 200-250MPH............ but 300+ at the dam), as the town of Taree has got behind our world record bid, and the boat will be housed up there too
we just hope that Blowering dam will fill up ( 1/2 of one percent full now) but the melting snow will help this, so we can run in oct-nov
Regards
Dave......Sorry, I'm at a mates (Luke)house and this message is under his name, Dave
