1jz crank & cam angle sensors (and microtech help) Fri, 25 April 2003 15:44 Go to next message
Paul and I have just finished wiring up the microtech (LTX12) to my 1jz, and have hit a slight snag.

The car runs fine up to 2000rpm, and after this it runs *really* rich, to the extent that the engine is choking, the rpm fluctuate wildly, and it blows lots of smoke. We're fairly sure it's a problem with the cam/crank and sensor wiring.

can anyone help with some microtech wiring, or possibly a different diagnosis if anyone can think of one?
(preferably soon, I'd like the car drivable by monday)

thanks in advance,

Greg

First of all, take a look at the software/hand controller readout for RPM, see if this changes to something unreasonable when you hit 2000rpm - but I'd say if the thing starts and idles alright, then it's probably nothing to do with the CAS. I presume you use a MAP sensor? Is there something questionable here that is dumping in FAR too much fuel? Also check out the mapping in the software. Make sure the MAP sensor reading, RPM, and all others are reading correctly and don't suddenly and massively change at 2000rpm.

THe other possibility is some kind of electrical noise interference!

it starts fine
but it has an air warning (no air intake temp sensor - this shoudln't be a problem) and an RPM warning.. dont know what this is.
as soon as we hit 2000 rpm, the laptop readout jumps to about 8000rpm, then the engine starts choking on a *massive* amount of fuel.

all the maps look fine.

Something is telling the ECU the engine is doing 8000 rpm and it's dumping 8000 rpm worth of fuel in at ~2000 rpm, therefore it runs rich. Well, that's one possibilty anyway.

Are the cam/crank angle sensors OK (when tested as per the Toyota manual)? Is the sensor calibration correct? Are the sensors receiving the correct voltage? Is there some sort of 'cutoff' or 'trigger' voltage/current that is incorrectly set? Not sure how the Microtech does all of that (I'm not at all familiar with them), but there is clearly some funny business going on with engine speed detection. The fact it comes up with an RPM warning suggests there is an issue OR it might just be that it thinks you are overspeeding the engine.

Do Microtech have a 'support desk' at all? With all the 1J conversions going on, surely this is one they must have done. If they do, there will (hopefully) be a database of common probs.

We went back to Microtech and they have issued Greg with a different wiring diagram! Different cam/crank sensor wiring!!! Evil or Very Mad

I knew it was nothing we were doing wrong and had to have something to do with the crank and cam sensor wiring cause the tacho on the laptop was all of a sudden going to 8000rpm+.
