Mkiv Modifications - thoughts?

In the near future, I'll be purchasing a Mkiv Supra TT Manual. On initial purchase I'll be doing a number of things to it, though very little on the high performance stakes (I hope to purchase one with FMC, rims, lowered, bov, exhaust).
In relation to "non-performance enhancing" modifcations, but more on the lines of "durability for the many years to come", what do people suggest doing to make the car / engine tougher and more reliable? Obviously they're a tough car as is, though for example I'll be changing the turbos compressor wheels from ceramic to metal, for starters.
I hope that makes sense

Why are you planning to change the wheels to steel? You seem like you aren't totally into the modifying for heaps of power group. I think you'd find that as long as you don't go silly with the boost, you won't have any problems with the turbos at all.

I'm with Frank - don't waste your time or money changing the compressor wheels unless you want to run major power, but you would have to upgrade the injectors before the compressor wheels!
As for standard equipment you should be able to find one with a FMIC, lowering is not really an issue so don't get hung up on it, and don't waste your time too much looking for one with an aftermarket BOV, the stock is fine.
As for non performance mods, just make sure you change the gearbox oil as it will probably have some shity oil in it! The getrag 6sp is really fussy about the oil you use in it! has to be Dexron 2.
As for "cheap" performance - just replace the first cat with a straight dump pipe. If you really want you can do the second also. It's a nice quiet car so don't spoil it by making it sound like a lawn mower!!!!
Good luck

Great advice!
I too recommend making the car as illegal as you possibly can in the interests of as little performance gain as you can manage.

apparently the mkiv supra turbos tend to fail after 80-100000km unless you're really nice to them (this from a turbo specialist website i *think*)
they're a damn durable car. no need to go changing anything ir you're not after more power. Get a pod filter if you like, that way the stocker BOV will sound through the pod filter.
As was said, dont worry too much about lowering it. they're pretty low as is, and as soon as you start dropping them much they get clearance problems (especially with a front bar/skirts/zorst)
engine is *tough*, and gearbox is even tougher. as long as you keep the boost to a reasonable level (lower than 13psi is good) then you should have no problems

i think hes talking about the turbine wheel guys, not the compressor wheel. simply upgrading the turbine wheel to a non ceramic number wont require any fuelling systems mods at all...
that siad, do they actually have ceramic t/wheels in the 2jz?? i dunno, dont flame me - just asking!!

Yeah, I know what he meant, what I was saying is that it was money spent elsewhere. The ceramic wheels aren't fragile, its only when they get over-boosted and the shaft speed becomes so high they dislodge. With a stock or near stock boost level I can't see this happening.
The Jap-Spec Mk4's came with the ceramic wheels and the US Spec had the steel wheels.

Nice suggestions guys. Ta muchly.
Yes, I especially needed some more information regarding those ceramic wheels - I heard some nasty stories (old wives tales?) of them going crunch and spreading nasty bits through other components - but if what is being said here is true, no I don't intend to up the boost but keep it stock; so saying I may keep the wheels stock as well.

With a decent exhaust, a decent intercooler that flows well, you will lessen the strain on the turbos, if you keep them at stock boost (you may have to use a boost controller to set the boost back down to stock after these) they will be even more reliable than they would be from the factory in theory.

oh, and as for turbine wheels fracturing and sending 'junk' into the rest of the engine system - the only place its going to go is into the cat - no problemo

A boost controller won't help if you've put an exhaust on a 2JZ; the boost creep issue is caused by the wastegate being too small. The only simple way to keep the boost down is to install a restrictor in the dump pipe. I have a 2.5" restrictor in mine, but it still hits 12psi!
