 top speed of a ra60 celica

has anyone ever got a ra60 celica above 180km/h, the other night my old 21rc got to 180, ( 4 speed auto) and was screaming it nuts off, i was too scared to push it any further but has anyone else tortured their siily car past this? id like to know the exact top speed but im too scared to try! and anyone ever put in a 1ggte in a ra 60 before im about 2 but would like to know if anyone else has so i can get some advice!

did u even bother searching the forums?
or did u even consider going to the tech articles section, cause if u cant find info on putting a 1G into a celica im sorry but i dont think you have what it takes to actually do the swap.

I had my RA60 up to 175kph fully loaded with gear for trip, two people and the airconditioning on. Had a few revs to play with still but the thing didn't have the power to keep piling on the kph because of everything against it.

yeah mate if u need to know im a A grade qualified mechanic specialising in engine rebuilds so ive got maybe a bit of what it takes dont u think? i just wanted someone who has done it before so i could get a hand. get over yourself and dont judge what u dont know

Take a chill pill. Rob and myself have been on here for ages, you get sick of hearing the same question being asked over and over, thats the whole point of the search feature and why there are tech articles. Get it?

Tops speed I got with the 21R-C was about 170-something I think.
Top speed with the 1G-GTE? Well, my speedo is off (people tell me I do about 125 when my speedo shows 110). I've taken it to 200 by my speedo... Who knows what the real road speed was but it was still pulling like a train. I reckon top speed would be limited by gearing 'coz it felt like it could keep pulling until it hit the rev limiter.

I got my ra65 up to 185 (I guess it's that little bit extra torque). It didn't even sound terribly unhappy... I just ran out of road.
200 is the top speed in my supra as yet. that was on a road not designed for those speeds, so I quickly lost interest in finding the top speed and slowed down to something more sensible (150 i think it was).
I know you didn't ask, but I had to brag somewhere

ah, I thought I was doing well when I had my 18R-C up to 130, but then I found out that my Speedo was out by 10 so I was only doing 120. The car just wouldn't go any faster! Time for a new engine me thinks

165kph from the gold coast all the way to brisbane city
not one cop the whole way, i was well pleased
i think i ended up doing the 40k trp in around 10 minutes... i didnt really want to take my eyes off the road at the time at the steering gets a little ratshit beyond 130 or so

Everyone bags out the handling. Mine is solid as a rock up to and past 150kph, unless there is a really strong cross-wind but only then do you notice it...

it was only a tie-rod end frank, nothing major
and i wsant dissin the handling, the celicas have better handling stock than most of the other cars i've ever driven

Nah, it cool, I know whatcha meant. Some people pay out on the handling for various reasons. My car is pretty stable at higher speeds. Damn, you can barely rock the car by pushing at it...quite odd.

my ra65 felt safe allll the way up to 180, except it was getting that "gliding" feeling, where if you turn you know nothing is going to happen (except maybe a spin followed by flips)
even on that crappy outback victoria road, my supra felt more sure-footed though... it feels nice and safe (except the brakes aren't quite up to my liking)

I'm sure there is a bit more high speed stability hiding in the slightly higher weight and the longer wheelbase.

My 23 with a 18r-c and a webber would just make 180 with 3 people in the car on the flat. I guess thats ok for a tired engine.

The best I managed in my RA60 with a 21R-C was about 185 before I ran out of road, it was feeling a bit shaky but nothing too worrying. the supra couldn't quite pull 200 when it had the 5m in it but what can you expect from an engine who's crank had a layer of grease, dirt and other foreign matter half a millimeter thick

yeah i am real happy with the handlind and steering in my ra60, does anyone notice the tierods need adjusting often?? my car seems to toe out a lot of the time and needs adjusting frequently. thanks for the info on the 1 ggte i cant wait to get it in, but i have to bore and polish first is there anyone with a ra60 in brisbane? that plans to work on it or has? idreally like to get in touch and maybe help each other out and i get cheap parts being a mechanic

i did 200km/h last night in my sa63. i was in 4th gear and ran out of road quickly. am gonna try and hit 220 sometime in the next couple of weeks

Well i got my 76 mk2 corona to 180 with a 4m in it stock as a rock.
I fully rebuilt the engine ported the head manifold put a new carbie exaust extractors.
So i reckon she'll go th 210 - 220 maybe
shame my speedo runs out at 180.
Im still running the engine in but i accidentlyt got it to 160 showing some silly ford owner whos boss that was in third theres still another gear to go.  cant wait for the speed test

its a little disappointing to post this really...
on ENDLESS dead straight empty roadway. tank full of mobil 8000 and fresh oil, and all the old 5me could squeeze out was 186kmh
refused to budge beyond that. was healthy and keen up to about 165. could power up and down from this number all day... but once at 180, it was a struggle to 186... and there she stopped for more than 2 kms.
i guess shes had a thrashing in her life, and now at 230,000km, with 60,000km laid down in the last 2 years, she will soon be laid to rest

I can tkae a pretty good guess that my supra will top out at about 240.
that'll be limited by the gearbox.. I reckon the 1jz is good for more than that

with a fresh / good condition gbox and maybe an oil cooler your 1j auto should be good for 260+ with 4.1 gears.
It has been done before - though the auto started to slip from heat buildup.
