I know this has all been done to death, but while looking over the celicasupra forum from the US, I found that the guys from over there had found that the 7.5" Hilux diff will actually fit in the supra carrier(apparently). Have PM'd a few people and awaiting their reply, but if it is a straight swap, the price may be steep at $950 + GST, but I'm pretty sure they're a proper Torsion style diff not the original clutch type(much more reliable).

Only the JZA70's had the Torsen G-series LSD's. The Hilux diff is 8" anyway, whereas the F-series diff in the MA61 was 7.5"

Yeah, the back end is, but the front is listed on all parts lists as 7.5". Still waiting for the yanks to get back to me, but there's a supplier in Qland i think that can get them if they are a straight fit

So someone makes a Torsen LSD for the front diff in a 4WD Hilux? That sounds cool!

It's call Detroit TrueTrac. It should fit in any F-series diff, as long as your axle is 28mm 27 spline.

Second diff from the top.

$950 + GST = $1045 for a second hand diff centre. Shocked

For another $300, you could have a NEW TRD 4 pinion F series LSD delivered to your door.

A few years ago I went scouring wrecking yards to get an F Series out of a 4 Runner. There arn't alot around so I gave up and just got one of mine rebuilt and tightened up the LSD and its been fine since.

BUT...... If I was to have my time again, I'd throw in a 9 inch too and put a briggs and stratton under the bonnet!

Surprised Surprised Surprised Surprised

Hell i'd even get rid of the rear discs and go back to drums Smile

Cosmo actually meant a brand new centre made by this mob. At around 1K for a brand new Torsen centre, that's a good deal.

http://www.locked-drive.com.au/truetrac.htm

Cosmo reply sent. Apologies......I clearly misunderstood you.

We don't need to go back to 9" conversions. Razz

A mate has a Hilux diff in his RX3 with one of these centres. He absolutely RAVES about it... have to be careful not to bring up the topic or you can't keep him quiet Smile

The car has 500rwhp and is regularly street driven. I myself went on a full-day cruise in it and can vouch for the fact that it still runs pump fuel (with methanol enrichment).

The diff has NO problems handlding that power on Azenis - he absolutely munches gearboxes though so he's certainly not easy on it. I think he's had it for a bit over a year now.

If you can afford one, they're a great choice.

That's Right. Brand new replacement, $950 + GST. The torsen style are a proper torque proportioning diff. Check at this site, it's got a full explanation. www.4wdworld.com.au/products/detroit/detroit.htm
gianttomato-don't stress, all's good
Also check this guys, real theory on the torsen idea

Oooops.... I feel like an idiot now!

I had looked into a Torsen conversion for my car already, studied the theory, and loved it muchly - till I did the numbers. So I went and bought a KAAZ LSD YESTERDAY! Not a cheap little pumpkin either... Actually, it'd be interesting to try and compare them almost directly - next person who fits one, tell me!

I spoke to oppsite lock on wed, and i got quoted 990 inc GST. he's getting me all the tech info and specs from (detroit, US) on the 7.5" IFS 4-runner truetrac to compare with out f-series. the only concern may be which bearings it runs, but we'll soon find out.

well, in case anyone is thinking *budget* like i am...

consider a purchase from the US direct:

TT911A342 TOY TRUETRAC IFS $314.92

http://www.drivetrainspecialists.com/products.asp? catid=37&cat=TOYOTA

+ about US$70 shipping via 4-6week USPS surface

OR if we can get a group buy happening, we can see how many we can fit in a small 200kg crate, and ship for US$300 total.

cheers
ed

purely cost, or some other reason?>

Because the only Torsen I could find suitable was going to cost about $3500 by the time I did a diff housing, changed stud pattern, bought a new torsen, new gears, etc. etc.

Let's just say the KAAZ had better be REAL good! I'll letcha's know, putting it in on Monday.

This is what the link that gianttomato put up contains.
I know it's long, but this is the original post from Don. L(American smartman behind the conversion) Detailed conversion.
BTW prices are in US$

Well, thanks to all of you who provided info on rebuilding and upgrading the
LSD unit in my MK II Supra. Happy to report that the aftermarket LSD for a
Toyota 4x4 truck front axle, does indeed fit into our cars. I used a
TrueTrac 7.5" unit (same company makes Detroit Lockers), had to use Toyota
carrier bearings (part# 50066) maybe Archie can check on this part# to
verify. At any rate, this bearing fits our diff casing, and fits the
TrueTrac unit. I don't believe it is the same part as our original carrier
bearings. Sean at River City Differentials in Rancho Cordova, Ca. was just
awesome. He had the stock unit open and apart in maybe 5 minutes, sized up
the TrueTrac unit, decided it indeed would fit, had it installed in the
casing in less than an hour. I brought in a 3rd member from a Pick-in-Pull
yard with a 4.10 gear ratio for Sean to do the install. My orig rear end has
a 4.30 ratio. I'm looking forward to the slightly higher speeds in each
gear. Fortunately the engine is strong enough that the higher ratio rear end
is not a problem. I only had a chance for a fairly brief test drive, it was
about 11:30pm before I finished everything and I was pretty tired. Rear end
definitely hooks up better than before. Jumping on first gear from a right
hand turn use to result in quite a bit of wheel spin, not much forward
movement, felt like I had 500hp underneath. Now it seems to just steer and
jump forward. No dramatics. Looking forward to autocross this sunday to try
it out in a fast 2nd gear corner exit.
Cost of the LSD was $350 , carrier bearings $60, Sean charged me $40 labor
to set it up. Hardest part was getting the new 3rd member back onto the car.
What should have taken maybe 2 hrs ended up about 5 hrs. I just couldn't
get those darn 8 bolts on the diff housing to line up with the supports under
the car. Easy getting the 3rd member off the car though. Info follows:

TrueTrac gear driven LSD model# 911A342 , 27 spline
Toyota carrier bearings #50066 (may need to verify this) (90368-50006 ????????)

The old ring an pinion gear looked fine so reused it. Wanted to replace the
pinion and side seals but the parts I ordered didn't arrive on time. Could
always replace them later while on the car. The guy to call:

Sean
River City Differentials
3459 Sunrise Blvd #3
Rancho Cordova, CA 95742
916-852-7109

He says lots of customers ship him the 3rd members, he rebuilds, or replaces
the diff units, ships it out again. Something to consider if no dependable
diff shop in your area. I called around and most places acted like I was
asking them to walk on water. Randy's Ring and Pinion was one of the first
places I called, in the same area as Sean, and the shop foreman told me "we
don't do that." Lot of places just don't want to do anything thats not
listed in a book. Sean was not only willing to do it, he was actually very
knowledgeable. Told me the truck guys have been putting Supra LSD units in
the trucks years ago. Seems only right we can now enjoy the aftermarket
parts the trucks created

Compared to a $1000 Quaiff unit, or Torsen unit this should be similar. No
clutch plates to wear out, no rebuilding, good lock up. Some people have
told me if the car was generating lots of HP, the clutch type LSD units may
be better, although requiring rebuilding every few years. I think as long as
I'm not getting more than 300hp or 300 lbs of torque, this TrueTrac unit
should be fine. BTW, I put in Redline 75-90 gear oil, same stuff used in my
stock LSD unit. The TrueTrac doesn't need the friction modifier ingredient,
but shouldn't hurt since just helical gears, and the ring and pinion is
already broken in. If a new ring gear set, prob would use regular gear oil
for couple hundred miles for break in, then go with Redline. Any questions
just let me know !

Don L.

My diff is going to require a rebuild soon at any rate.

What is a rebuilt diff going to be worth as opposed to installing this baby?

From WilliamB82 off the CelicaSupra forum

"yes, the part # i listed is a swap in. you will need the carier bearings for an 89+ 4x4 front 7.5in irs diff though. with those bearings it is a drop in. i havent installed mine cause i want to use a 3.727 as with the current 4.10 i was breaking the tires loose at the top of second at 7psi. i dont want to think about the traction problems when i up it to ~20psi. alos, i was running 245/60/14's at ~22psi tire pressure."

Great news for us. found that Reider Racing in the Us is the best with regards to price-$US300. Apparently the bearing and seal needed to convert are a bit-$US150. But im double checking this. Mite be able to get it cheaper through a mate who works for toyota parts??
