icon8.gif  Ever wanted to pimp slap a mechanic? Tue, 29 April 2003 01:36 Go to next message
My supra has been off the road over 3 weeks now Sad
And to please my dad(live with him so things gotta be as harmonius as possible), i decided to get a mechanic to change a 5m-ge and w57 box into my car(in the process getting hte ge head rebuilt)

After 2 and a half weeks of buggerising around this mechanic finally takes a look at both cars just to see what he's getting into. Ring him this morning, the idiot tells me that it cant be done, cost too much etc etc
I ask why
he says:
First up the air intake boxes are on different sides, they have different sumps so that means they arent interchangable and have differen oil pick ups(that right term?). Also the engine sits 40mm forward and that means new mounts. Also the wiring and loom are totally different.

I think "you fucken lazy prick"
But i say "i'll talk to my dad and get back to you"

looks like i'm doing this myself(well not me...a friend Razz)

keep you all updated

I'd recommend steering clear of this mechanic from now on. The airbox is on the same side, the sump is interchangeable, and the engine sits in exactly the same position. He's right about the wiring being different but that's an easy job. Sounds like he just doesn't have a clue!

Yo Cyber!
What is the old engine?
New engine si the 5MGE?
Plug & play on this side of the pond dood - afternoon job apparently.
5M/5MGE/7MGE and GTEs! all bolt up in any configuration.

Find a new mechanic, or just get hangin with other Supra owners in yer area! I'm looking to Stuff a 5MGE (cheap) in to the MA47, then upgrade that to the 7MGTE when I can ($$) lol.

Way I see it, even th e"wireing trouble" can be bypassed to some extent by running your stock (6 cyl) haress, and swapping over some of the sensors (that's my plan)

Oh, and yes, I'da bitchslapped the dolt in the "Mister Transmission" shop - I rolled in in the RA65 (you got SA65 i think) to egt fresh tranny oil in the W58, "You don't change the oil in those" he sais.
Dolt.

;p

I am definatly steering clear of this guy
I've got a few more leads, if i can get a pro to do it it'll make my life at home easier(father really doesnt want it done bush mechanic style....which is the only way to fly if you ask me, but then again he can be a real bitch if things dont get done HIS WAY)

If these mechanics dont check out i'm just gonna have to live with dad in PMS mode Razz

Thanks for varifying what i thought was the case

The analogue 5MGE will be the direct plug and play option, but most of the ones we got here will have the digital ECU. Nevertheless it's a minor issue....the only hiccups will be to put all the 5ME sensors on the 5MGE and modify the 5MGE dizzy to have the same internals as a 5ME (any good engineering firm should be able to do this for you for about $100). The engine should run fine but may require some minor tweaking via the AFM.
The sumps and pickups will be directly interchangeable. The engine mounts will be the same.
This swap is as basic as they get.

hey CP.. if you want.. ill have a word with my mate Chuin about getting that stuff done by his dad.. his dads a toyota mechanic.. he can fix any car.. but he only works on toyotas.. through personal choice..

so i can have a word with him if you want.. and it shouldnt cost too much either.. because he does a good job of them through the principle of the thing, not for the money. if he takes a job he does it properly, is what i mean. so let me know if you want me to talk to him.. send me a msg on my mobile or something..
0439920489 (at least thats the number for now.. till i get my new mobile. Smile)
thats probably the only sure fire way of getting hold of me in under a week Very Happy

Peace

Heya CP,

Lemme know if ya DIY. I'm going to be pretty busy with the 1JZGTE (whenever it arrives ... 'bitch-slap engine importer?'), but could at least give you an extra set of hands occasionally (most of my mechanical expertise is invested in my brother-in-law).

Or, if you want a recommendation on mechanics, I can think of a few who are either (a) honest , cheap & compatent or (b) have LOADS of experience working on MkII Celica-Supras. Don't know anyone with a+b that I can personally vouchsafe yet. Also, don't forget that there are a few folks in Perth who have done this swap themselves who might lend a spanner.

HTH,

Justin
