Digital Tacho in a Camry? Wed, 30 April 2003 08:32 Go to next message
Heya guys,

At the moment I'm driving a 1987 Camry Stationwagon, its a rather fat beast with no power steering or anything special. It does however have 4 wheels and because its been in the family its whole life is mechanically perfect and actually gets off the line pretty quickly Very Happy One annoying feature, where a tacho should be is a rather large, and irritating clock(it works mind u so you can see how late for work you are..). I work at Dick Smith and we sell a rather nice digital tacho kit which I want to put into the car. I've asked around the guys at work as I didn't know whether you could put a tacho in a car that doesn't actually have a tacho in it, apparently all a tacho does is read the voltage drop from the coil and display the RPM? I've been told it will work, but it can do funny things to the ECU(depending on the ECU).This is my question, has anyone installed this kit an any EFI Toyota, or does anyone see any problems with installing it? Thanks guys.

Info on the kit(the one I'm getting is the same, but its got a row of LEDs showing redline and comes in a nice little box) :

I have one of the kits you are talking about which I used for testing the engine in my halfcut!
It has 2 inputs to suit engines with an igniter or just a coil.
It will work on your car without causing any issues with an ECU or anything else!

Yeah, the dick smith tacho will work in there - but my suggestion is to go to the wreckers, and grab a factory tacho dash for the thing if you REALLY must have one - but think logically, stocky camry, is a tacho REALLY gonna do much for you?

we have 3 camrys of the same model at my place, and mines the only one with a tacho, im jus saying this cause other than look good it doesnt do much for me cause you can definatly feel when a 3s-fe is giving up (above 5,000) which for a manual is around the 80k mark in second

{edit}
on a side note i did think of getting a similar kit from jaycar and use the 16 hole vent above the central vents in the dash, but money and wasting another day seemed to put me off it.

and taking apart a camry dash is simple, all you need is a phillips head screwdriver (i dont know if this applies to all camrys (camries?))

Heya,

I know that a tacho aint going to do alot of good for a camry, its not like I want to put it there for looks or anything Cool . I'm putting a CD player in for my Dad, fixing up the lights behind the aircon controls & the air con controls themselves. I thought seeing I had the dash off, and I can get this kit particularliy cheap(being staff, and the item is no longer being stocked) I thought why not? I mean in July I'll be buying a MA61 anyway so I aint going to use the car much anymore, I spose its just a kit I wanted to put together and experimentation Smile
Thanks for all the info guys, invaluable as always! Very Happy I'll become a member as soon as I get da Supra.
