how do you get an outer tie rod end out? use some spray or something?

if your removing it off the joint... correct me if i'm wrong but i've always hit the shaft sideways, that creates pressure on the 'taper' and it will pop out.

Undo the lock nut first. I spent ages trying to get the thing off before I realised it had a lock nut. You may already know this but this is what held me back for ages. BTW I have 0% mechanical experience.

always hit it on the side, if you hit it from underneath you will damage the rod or the thread, just bang it on the side, and you will be all sorted.

My advice:
Always use 2 hammers - don't just belt stuff. Big bugger to hold against one side, moderate one to do the hitting directly opposite.
Remember to take the pin out before you take the locknut off
And remember morse tapers LOVE bad language!
