HI. Ive Just Bought an RA28 with a 3t-gte, garret t-28 and a supra 5 speed and I was wondering wot peoples thoughts are on different engines. i have access to a 4a-gze, 1g-ge and a 1g-gte. i want to race the car and work the engine slightly. should i go for one of these engines or stick to the one i have. how well do the 3tgte engines respond to performance mods etc. any advice would be great

G'day,
Welcome to the world of ra28's. The first thing you have to think of is what class are you planning on racing in.... different classes have different regulations. I have a 1ggte and can't recomend it enough, cheap and easy - and goes hard. The 3t can go real well, but is old - talk to jamie - mrta22 he has a very hardcore 3tgte, and joel has a 3tg ra28. the 4a is interesting - they can go heaps hard - refence yogi, but cost a fair bit to get there - but would be good weight wise.
The answer depends on what class restrictions you have - if you were going for horsepower per dollar, i dont think you could beat a 1ggte.
Cheers Stew

For the moment, the racing i was referring to was only motokahanas(is that how its spelt?). so there is no restriction. i had a ta22 with a 4agze in it and that felt like there was too much power(or torque i should say) i couldnt get the power down. that experience in itself is making me lean towards the 1ggte(ie. a turbo rather than supercharger)i wonder if my w55 will bolt up without a hassle........

I have a bit of interest in this as I'm in the same boat with my 28.trying to stick with a toyota motor as I already have a 23 with a rota.Maybe the answer is to go for a drive in a few different types and see what takes my fancy,it is hard to go past a rota thou but I will have the 23 for a daily driver so that should help

I don't know how much a 3T-GTEU weighs but a 1G-GTE would probably weigh about the same.
The 1G-GTE is the greatest bang for the buck conversion for an RA Celica.
BUT if you're racing and you want better weight distribution, then the 3S-GTE is the go. Better power, newer design, lower weight, more aftermarket support. The problem is that it's a hideously expensive conversion.
A 3S-GTE conversion will cost almost double a 1G-GTE conversion because it has to be converted to RWD. Pretty much everything has to be custom fabricated.
There is one other alternative. The BEAMS II 3S-GE out of the RS200. It produces 157kW naturally aspirated and is already in RWD config. It is also very expensive because it's very new and it's a Lexus engine.

Goto the Toymods site and look at the dyno days, I think there are 1GGTE's putting out over 150kW with exhaust, filter and 14psi boost.

Here are some numbers from our dyno days.
3rd gen 1G-GTE. Air filter. 2.5" exhaust. 11psi (stock): 127.8kW 2nd gen 1G-GTE. Air filter. 3" straight through pipe. 14psi: 139kW 3rd gen 1G-GTE. Air filter. 3" with no muffler. 14psi: 153.2kW
A stock 200SX has a 32% drivetrain loss (147kW shows as 100kW on the dyno), so if we take that figure and adjust the dyno readings, you get these numbers at the flywheel. 187.9kW 204.4kW 225.3kW
The drivetrain loss on these old Celicas will be higher than a new car though, so the actual flywheel numbers should be higher.
The 1G-GTE makes a lot of power with very minimal mods...

Also take into account that that in most racing classes, the addition of a turbo is either illegal or you are faced with significant handicaps - std boost, the fitment of a restrictor plate and a capacity multiplication factor 1.7, thereby making your 3SGTE a 3.4 l engine. You'll be competing against full house 6 litre V8's. The fitment of a 6-8 cylinder engine where only a 4 cylinder was an option is generally considered a 'major engine change', and would result in your vehicle running in a sports sedan class, or potentially unclassifiable.
If you are quite serious about racing it, buy the CAMS motorsport manual and check out what class you think you would like to run in and what the rules are. Then choose your engine car combo. It will save you the incredible heartache of having spent 2 years building a car you can't race.
Of course if it's your road car and you think you might like to take it to the track once a year and sprint it, then build whatever you like.

GT, have you had a look at the street class we have over here in Perth? I only read about it the other day but its a separate class that kinda fits in between others, possibly I might not be put in the super-sedans class if I wanted to race...I dunno, will have to look into it further!
