Take for example a stock 3t-gteu with 200,000kms on it, what is need to put forged pistons in it, obviouslly, oversized pistons/rings/bore redone .. what about rods etc?
basically what im after is, what do you need to get forged pistons in a 3t-gteu, so i can go order em.

As far as i'm aware, no one makes 'off the shelf' 3TG forgies (they definately didnt when I bought mine)
I sent a standard piston to APEP in victoria, and they copied it from a ROSS forged blank, so I still used the factory gudgeon pin size & factory rods. The pistons were 20 thou oversize, to suit the bore size after machining them for a cleanup. If your bores are ok, and only need re-honing, then you could get away with standard bore size pistons.
The 3TG rods are pretty tough if you dont intend regularly revving past 7000rpm. wouldnt hurt to get them shotpeened though, and replace the rod bolts.
Cheers
Phil

Just out of interest, what did the set from APEP cost you?

so to cut a long story short, ordering some forged pistons a bigger turbo and labour, is all i need to run 20psi all day every day?

Is VW beetle piston conversion how common there? Here VW beetle forged pistons cost one fourth of the price of for example wisecos. Every now and then I can read some (finnish) car magazine article about some oldschool Toyota(T/R series engine) with VW forgies. There are some similarities like 22mm pin and suitable sizes in bore size look below...
CIMA/MAHLE-forged pistons
1650cc 87.0mm x 69mm
1700cc 88.0mm x 69mm
1800cc 90.5mm x 69mm
1850cc 92.0mm x 69mm
1900cc 94.0mm x 69mm
2100cc 90.mm x 82mm
2200cc 92.0mm x 82mm
2300cc 94.0mm x 82mm
If I remember right there are two pin to piston deck heights.
I had exact measurements in my computer before it fucked up.
VW pistons are flat headed but I had tech article about this and that dude said with fly-cuts and shaved block he had compression ratio something like 8.0.
If some one knows more about this, post me...

Forged pistons are good in that if your tuning just happens to not be perfect they will handle a bit of light detonation better than normal ones, but to run 20psi day in and day out, you've gotta make sure your tuning is perfect, regardless of the pistons.

20psi in a 3TGTE all day, every day, ..., hmmmmmmmmmm, watch out for spinning bearings, ..., lack of fuel, ..., increased temperatures, pinging and detonation from inappropriate fuel, ..., head gasket failures, ..., timing issues, ..., but yeah, do it on a limited budget!!!

Frank is right!
My tuner is running a 3T with 24psi boost (max of the turbo) and his engine is COMPLETELY STOCK. But his tuning is very very good.
Better tuning means that if something does go wrong (old engine, not detonation), you just buy another 3T and put it in. Much cheaper than bulletproofing your engine so you can make the tuning dodgy.

24psi on a stock engine? are the fuel injectors and turbo stock? the computer stock also?
i thought the max of the ct20 was around 16psi

It has 8 injectors to cope with fueling and the turbo is from a 12a rotary (he's now thinking of putting on my T04E!!).
Computer is not factory, its Delco (same as on my car).
I was just proving a point that MOST toyota engines (don't start a flame war!) internals are great if you tune it properly.
I'm hoping for at least 7psi if not 10psi on my stock internals with 10.0 (or 10.4?) compression. The fueling must be pretty damn precise for this though.

Not actually sure if they're forged or not. I know the crank is pretty damn good with the 6 bolt mains, but not sure about pistons.
Even if they were forged I still wouldn't skimp on the tuning, as detonation is BAD.

Oh I didn't imply that you could just ignore the tuning. I was just mentioning that I thought the 1UZ had forged pistons from the factory.

Ah thats ok then Just don't like it when someone misses my point.
I'll have to look into it if they're forged or cast(?). At any rate 10psi would be great fun!! Should be over 300rwkw if it can be done without killing the enigine. Should keep my taste for power sated for at least a month!

According to all sources they are definetly forged. Same as in 1GFE, they have to meet Lexus metallurgy standards.
