What tyres are available for standard ma61 rims?
Am i right in believing the widest size u can use are 265's (the bf goodrich radials)?
Where can u buy these big ass tyres and wat do they cost?
Thanks in advance

265? You'd really be pushing to get 265's on there. The rim is only 7" wide. Largest I'd want to go with, for the rear anyway would be a 245. Anyway, I don't see that going that wide is really necessary unless you are pushing some big hp out of it. I'm running Yoko a509 225 all round on my 7m and it's fine. And that's with about 170kw at the rears. However I don't know whether the a509s are still available. I got my set over a year ago and they were being phased out to be replaced by the a539 I think. I got mine for $140/ea if that helps at all

I bought A509's for my MA61 a couple of months ago. I'm really impressed with these tyres, they hook up real well considering how much power my car has now. I paid $130 which is excellent value IMO. They've been "phased out" for a while now but there is still some old stock around, especially for unusual sizes (eg MA61 size).

I've got 235s front and back.. I'll check the brand tomorrow.
but I'm *really* impressed with them.. awesome stopping in the wet, and great holding in the dry.
apparently they perish fairly quickly, but they're also really cheap.

Does anyone reckon that running a 225 on a 6.5" rim would be overdoing it? I've decided if I can I'm going to be keeping my Ray's rims.
I'll have 205's on the front but I have a feeling once I shove a rocket up the cars arse its going to need more traction in the rear

I've got 265's on my rears, they seem a bit of overkill. When i have to get new tyres i think i'll stop at 245's all around.
And if anyone is curious, they are on stock rims
As a side note i should have my bitch back on Friday, ableit not the way i would of liked(but somtimes sacrifices must be made to serve the better interest of your household)

FWIW,
I've got 14x7s on the front and 14x8s on the back - both running Pirelli 225's. I'll probably switch back to stock rims when I find a cheap set in Perth.

My car came with Kelly Chargers on the back when I got it. They were bad and needed repalacing. I went for the Pirrellis (P6000, from memory??). I like the Pirrellis, though the Kellys look like they would be a good tire as well - and about $20 cheaper from memory as well. But maybe a little harder to find - local tire store near where I work didn't stock 'em.
- Justin
PS: As I mentioned above, my back wheels are 1" wider than the front - but both have 225 tires. A mate and I were arguing the other day whether the rears looked visably wider/different because the wheel was wider. I said no, he said yes. But it did get me a bit worried (WA cops LOVE yellow stickering cars with different width wheels front & back). Soemone please tell me that the difference shouldn't be visable with same sized tires. Thanks!

Thanks Cyber. I *think* I'm worrying about nothing - except my mate's bad vision. There's a heap of little stuff I'll have to fix before seeing the engineer and pits guys anyway - just getting paranoid about getting yellow stickered befor the conversion (ie: waste money fixing-up the 5ME type stuff before puting in the 1JZ (whenever it arrives - damn Toyshop!).

Personally guys and gals, I wouldn't look at the kelly chargers again. I've had 215/65/14 for a year now, and although they do wear pretty well, I find that they're definitely lacking in the wet and tend to also be average in the dry. The only reason i got them in the first place was that i was cash strapped (at uni at the moment).
I must also mention that i do a fair amount of hard driving when i get onto the hilly roads near home(Great Ocean Rd and all through the otways).
Just my 2c

Kelly Charger = cheapo bogan tyre. Buy 'em if you're strapped for cash, otherwise get something decent!

Frankie,
If they'll fit - they would be good (I run 225's). Am I missing something in your question?
And don't call me Persy!
I'm tired (obviously!), time to go home and sleep.

I wouldn't do it if you care about handling. Even on a 7" rim they squirm around a bit much for my liking. The ideal rim width for a 225 tyre is 8".

This was my thinking. I reckon I'll keep the 215's on the back until I get some different rims when I've changed to 5-stud.

Norbie where did you get the "ideal" rim width for a certain tyre from? Is there a guide, a rule of thumb, or is this from your experience?
BTW out of interest what are the widest rims that can fit on a MA61 (front and rear).
Cheers

The ideal rim width is slightly less than the tread width. If the tread is too much wider than the rim it's not supported as securely so it can move around under load.

I used to have Kelly Charger 225 all around and i am glad to change them over to Yokohama A509. They are a far superior tyre then Kelly. All the cars in our family have Yokohama. The SA63 - A539, ZZT231 - A680 and VN Commodore - A509.

I got told the same from my tire fitters. When i enquired there were two sets left. Since I have a set fitted, now there is one in my area. It set me back $145 a corner.
As for what happened to the old Kellys. I gave it to a friend so he can use it as burnout tyres for his HQ Ute...
Cheers.

I had 509's on mine and I found them to be crap????
They didn't stick at all especially in the wet.
I've now got BF Goodridge 265's on the back and they're gripping as well as could be expected.
I'd almost say if I didn't have those 509's on the back when Scott was driving the Supra there wouldn't have even been an accident. They were hopeless in the wet.

WTF? the P6000 come in other sizes than 195/65 in 14".
All the tyre places I went to as well as the catalogs list the only 14" tyre in the P6000 range as 195/65. I wanter 205's for my celica but settled on 195/65 P6000's.
