removing front wheelbearings Mon, 05 May 2003 00:26 Go to next message
simple question: How do most people remove the bearing seats (is this what they are called? The bit that gets stuck in the hub anyway...) Use a gear puller?
I 'practiced' on a damaged hub that I had, by knocking the seat out from behind with a hammer(large) and screwdriver Confused but now the hub is a little more damaged Razz
any tips would be muchly appreciated

cheers

That is exactly what I do. Just use a little more caution and all will be good.

perhaps instead of a screwdriver, a length of steel rod with the edges of the end just rounded off. might cause a little less damage Smile and rememer to work you way around the ring of the outer bearing race, dont just smash it out from one side - you can ovalise the seat.

cheers

Try a hydraulic press dude... It's the only way to get it out properly...

I'm doing mine at the moment and a press is the way to go... easy as...

a hydraulic press is a bit of overkill isnt it!!

we are just talking about punching out the outer bearing race from the hub arent we??

If you can, get a brass or aluminium rod, or drift as it's also known. That way you won't damage anything, as the drift is softer than the axle, or whatever it may be.
