Hi ya all, i know the've been many post with regards to the 1G-Twin Turbo. I just want to know the following,

1) The good and bad points

2) IS this a Sequential Turbo ?

3) IN the Forum on the Top sometimes there's a RA40 i thing
with a 1G all polished and chromed. Where can i get to see more of that particular engine.

Thanks/Dispatcher

For points 1) and 2), this: SEARCH and a few well chosen keywords are your friend.

As for the 1G-GTE with the shiny pipes, Nark nabbed that from somewhere, last time I checked he couldn't remember where...

If the "shiny pipes" are HPC coated, that actually will make the car (slightly) faster.

Yeah, that was a pic that I found somewhere. I think it was in a mag...

What car is it going into? The 1G is a good engine, but some others may be better for you depending on what you have.

Should be a pretty easy swap since it's still a 1G.

But you might find that a 1JZ might be better value since you have the room in the engine bay and the long wheel base. You get more torque from the extra capacity. How heavy is a GX60?

Re: 1G-GTE Twin Turbo Tue, 06 May 2003 03:45 Go to previous messageGo to next message
HPC is a form of ceramic coating; it's pretty expensive but it's good stuff. One of its properties is heat resistance, which is especially beneficial on headers and turbo dump pipes (ie it keeps the heat inside the pipe). It's also used on intercooler pipes to reduce heat soak. I had my dump pipe and intercooler pipes HPC coated, but I had the latter painted matt black because they were too damn shiny! Smile

I assume the G means that it comes with a 1G from factory, in which case the 1G is the best choice.. but 1.2 tonnes is a lot of weight for a 1G to haul around.

Err.... 1.2 tonnes is the same as an A6 Celi like Narks or mine (1220kgs w/ driver & half a tank rings a bell Nark)

If it's a heavy car... perhaps try the 1G-GZE? Boost from idle should help move a heavy car around.

Just random thoughts, i don't pretend to know much.

Since when is 1200kg a heavy car for a 1G to be pulling around? Shit, in that case my ~1275kg Celica XX is going to be positively porcine!

Re: 1G-GTE Twin Turbo Tue, 06 May 2003 13:46 Go to previous messageGo to next message
that was kinda my point.

BTW that sounds pretty light for a Supra... I guess the 1G-EU must be lighter than an M series or soemthing, but all the Supra accessories add up. Even the padded dash is supposed to be substantially heavier in the Supra than the Celica.

Re: 1G-GTE Twin Turbo Tue, 06 May 2003 13:51 Go to previous messageGo to next message
Well, the rims I've got are lighter than the Supra ones, I've got a space saver spare coming instead of a full size spare, I don't have climate control. My seats are also lighter than the Mk2 ones, it all adds up. 1275kg is the goal weight once the 1GGTE is installed.

Ed's MA61 weighed 1340kg with half a tank of fuel, a toolbox and a sub, so I figure with the extra weight removed from the bits I've done, the less weight of the 1G, I reckon I can get in between 1275-1300kg which would be perfectly acceptable for a 2l turbo engine.

As for the Supra parts weighing more, they do *but*, having pulled apart quite a few Supra and Celica interiors, it wouldn't be by much.

Yup. No driver though. That was in full street trim (ie: half my wardrobe in the back along with other paraphernalia.

1200 is a good weight for a 1G. 1400 would be pushing it.

The GX60 looks pretty well like a MX62 Cressida Very Happy

Hmm, an MX62 crossmember makes a 7M-GTE an easy proposition....

BTW te manual states the "kerb weight" as 1250kgs, so in that case would a 7M-GTE Cressida beat the pants off a 7M-GTE MA61? Or do they need to add fuel, a diff and a motor into the kerb weight (is a MX62 / GA60 porkier than that? Sounds a bit too light to me).

Cheers
Wilbo

Sounds like your thermostat was buggered. The whole point of the thermostat is so the engine quickly heats up before it flows to the radiator.

A properly working thermostat should work as well as not having one and would get up to temperature sooner.

How heavy is the GX81?

Cranking up the boost doesn't change its off-boost behaviour (which is why we don't recommend 1G's in heavy cars). You're only on boost a small percentage of the time.

They weigh 1380kg. When you compare that, its less than current day EVO's and STi's, and properly tuned I'd say its a non-issue.

Well the Cress GX60 is completed. The 1G is quite a motor, and compared to the body weight (still guessing) it's quite fast. So will upgrade for more power slowly but surely.

Single turbs 1G lags like a cow.

Twins are cool.
