i currently have 3" CAI piping for my 3S-FE (camry), but a lot of people seem to be using 2.5" piping. is 3" too big for a 2.0L? i want to redo my CAI and make it professional like, but need to know what diameter piping will give me a useful gain.

as BIG as physically possible
It merely takes more air to the air filter for use within the engine.
Im using a 4inch pipe on a 6m

perhaps on a forced induction car, but for NA you need some air velocity, otherwise you will lose all low end torque. also, if i use 2.5" piping, how do i fit a pod filter with a 3" opening?

If you're just talking about pipe to feed the airbox from under the bumper or similiar, go to town on the size, biggest is better simply to let in as much air as possible. However, with the pipe from the throttle body>airbox, it's often best to take a look at what the manufacturer did - use a smooth, one piece pipe the same diameter and length as stock, for a good starting point, just without nasty resonance boxes etc.

Yeah second that to Mrshin.
Touring cars use masssssssive scoops across the front width of the engine bay.
The CAI from the front of the car to the airbox / pod filter is to be AS LARGE as possible in diamter, but not length.
Minimise length and make any curves as long and as smooth as possible.
4inches moves a fair bit of air and if anything increases the torque due to decreased intake temps and when its realllllly cold (like tonight 12 degrees) the mass air advantage added with a 'slight' amount of ram effect gives awesome gains.
My car is entirely different at night in winter and during the day.
CAI is the first mod i will do to any car i ever own.
and yes its N/A

oh i see where you guys are coming from, piping to the airbox, yeah big diameter, but i'm having a pod filter right on the end of the piping, down in the fender, so the size is critical, as its piping between filter and TB. stock size is just over 2", so i might make it 2.5". but as for material, the one i have now is made out of mild steel cause i read it will not asbsorb as much heat as aluminium, but it is heavy. could i use aluminium and coat it with many layers of ceramic paint (more than i did on the steel) so to reflect heat?

Personally i wouldn't do it because as you have described you are effectively altering the intake and the response between cracking the throttle, air passing the pod and the AFM will all be altered.
These mods are usually seen on show pony cars that arent street driven.
Get the pod filter inside a sealed airbox and plumb in some 4 inch pipe and i would say it will perform alot better than the pod inside the fender.
Not to mention how much cleaning it will require and water it will ingest.

the link was a good read, it seems to favour short ram intakes but its talking about VTEC and revving >6000rpm. my motor would be struggling to reach that (damn auto). i already have a CAI on my car, and i reckon it feels better than when i had a short ram intake (with the same filter), i just want to make another CAI, do a more professional job.
