gze and lightened flywheel Wed, 07 May 2003 03:43 Go to next message
Although I was told by people on these forums that a lightened flywheel would OK on a GZE, now that I've blown $700 and tried it I think it is causing me a whole heap of issues. When you put your foot down and the charger engages it puts a load on the engine right? Bigger pulley, more load!! Well with no inertia from the flywheel at low RPM the thing labours like you are going around a corner in fourth gear. This is only speculation at the moment and I'm after peoples opinion on this subject. How does a gze with normal RWD flywheel go? This is still lighter than the original GZE one is it not? Any help would be good.

Not quite.... a GZE flywheels weighs about 6Kg, whereas a RWD one weighs about 8 - BUT the rotational inertia of a GZE one would be much greater due to its design, as revs rise. BUT at low RPM, it would be in effect lighter - GZE's sound somewhat healthier when you free rev them.

Just HOW light is this flywheel of yours? I recently got one made up for mine, it was supposed to be about 4kg, but came back at 7... I wasn't quite happy, but slotted it in anyways. The result being that throttle response is a bit like a wet sponge.

It's a molly one which is supposed to be about 4.7kg I think. It revs out quick but drivability is not so great. What else could cause this low down labouring feeling? Tuning maybe.

Is it making boost when you boot it from low revs??

Have you got good spark??

Maybe it's fuelling up for some reason...

The flywheel shouldn't have that effect.

Have you run it with a factory flywheel at all?

Yes I have run it briefly with the rwd flywheel but I had other engine problems at the time. Can't remember it labouring like it does now though.
