icon7.gif  corolla sportivo 'box problem - better 'box to match? Wed, 07 May 2003 04:48 Go to next message
Hi all,

i've got a corolla sportivo and my 'box has had an overhaul once already and had the 3rd gear synchro rebuilt... under warranty. (i know... shouldn't drive it that hard but sometimes you can't help it!Smile. anyway the car is out of warranty and the 2nd and 3rd synchros feel like they're going to go (the 3rd for sure). was wondering if anybody knows if it would be more worthit to swap the 'box for a stronger one and if so how and/or where to get it from!

thanks heaps!

will that fit in the ae112r? that 'box should be a bit pricey still shouldn't it? not sure the prices of 'boxes but i'm not really looking to spend more than $1k on the box and has to cope with the extra power from the turbo.

Well How did I know this would come up soon? Look the Sportivo Corolla had a miss matched gearbox from day one, ie Standard 7A/4A C52, which would never cope with the Torque that the 7AFTE produces, the power is not the 'box' killer here. They're OK if you don't push them hard everyday but, as you have said, They obviously kill 2nd and 3rd, which is the main power gears, Now the 6-spd from the Blacktop 20V's (AE101&AE111) are a straight fit into the series two AE102's and your AE111. I was lucky to have a sportivo next to my AE102 which has this box fitting to it and I can confirm it's a straight fit. But you need everything incl the mounts for that gearbox, cables, and gear shifter, but, and a big but!, is the fact that the 20V doesn't produce the same amount of torque. So I hate to say, the 6-spd will last only as long as your current Gearbox, but they do have really nice ratio's and your 0-100kph will drop. If you want longivity, and better ratio's than standard, an AE101 GZE box is right on the money, and should have been there from day one! It has bigger shafts, bigger diff, bigger everything!! One of the guys that had 6-spd has gone this way, for that simple fact that they do last the punishment, and the price differences: $1200-2000 for the six and $250-500 for a GZE... So there you go.
PS
Both are available with LSD's, so more traction and this does liven then up!!

"miss matched gearbox from day one"
you can say that again! this standard box makes it a lot harder to cruise along without going over the speed limit, and with the boost up, it feels a lot worse because the lower boost response means i have to keep it a bit higher in the rev range for me to get any response when i tap the pedal. i've setup an anti-wastegate creep mechanism myself, and although boost comes on a lot harder, and although i have more control over on/off boost, i still have to wait quite a bit for it to kick in.

correct me if i'm wrong about this, not really to familiar about ratios etc., but if i'm looking at a 6 Speed box, i'm looking at faster response and better drivability in higher boost because of the shorter ratio gears, right? And if i'm looking at the GZE 'box, we are getting better driveline/'box longevity, correct? if that's the case, what about drivability and boost response? will they suffer? seems like quite a toss up aye!

anyway, which would be the better buy/option in your honest opinion, 6speed 20v or 5speed GZE box? sorry, one last question... did i read correctly somewhere, can't quite remember where, but i saw that the GZE box comes with a clutch type LSD standard? not sure if this was BS or not.

geez look how much i wrote.

Actually, the GZE box would suit the your turbo better as it has a heaps longer 1st and 2nd, which allows you to get the car on boost, keep it on boost and stay there. The 6-spd has a really short 1st and 2nd gear, better suit for high revving, lower torque, N/A engines, which don't get up to speed as quick, are good for freeway work, and a highier top speed, (of course, extra gear!). So what will happen with a 6-spd, as your engine comes on boost, the rev's will skyrocket to your redline quicker and harder than an N/A version, meaning you'll need to change gears quicker/sooner. The 5-spd, you have you can hold the gears a lot longer than, but will lose out a bit on top speed, but than again, toyota's have a spd limiter, So I don't think you'll miss out on much. To give you a comparison, my rally car ran a GZE box and now runs the six spd, the GZE's 1st and second took forever to rev out to the 8,000 redline and dropped the revs below the optimum power/torque band, which is up high. This made really dull and hard to keep it going fast. In the 6-spd, it's over in a few seconds and I can keep the engine on song ie high up the rev range where this engine performs. Overall, the GZE would be best suited for what your after.

thanks Johnny...

i see.. so what was the difficulties that you said about mating the GZE box to the 7AFTE? Something about having to replace the driveshafts etc. etc. as well that would need replacing wasn't it? incidentally.. was also interested in the LSD you were talking about for these boxes, you reckon it would be possible to score a GZE box with one of these on there already and how much would that set me back then?

sorry about all the questions.
Smile

box, driveshafts, new clutch, around the $600 mark. A slight mod to the top mount may also be needed. As the LSD, that luck of the draw.... ring around the importers such as SSS and get some prices. If you've got any other questions or want a quote for fitting email me at jk@stateasphalts.com.au
