Just thought I'd make a few of you drool over this info that I picked up about the new Toyota Indy engine. A testament to true racing design.
Type: Toyota Indy V8, Naturally Aspirated, DOHC, 4 Valves per Cylinder, Fuel Injected
Displacement: 3.50 Liters (213.6 Cubic Inches)
Power: 675+ hp
Maximum RPM: 10,300 rpm (Mandated by IRL Electronic Limiter)
Engine Development and Maintenance: Toyota Racing Development (TRD), U.S.A., Inc.
Engine Block: Aluminum Alloy
Crankshaft: Forged Steel Alloy
Pistons: Forged Aluminum Alloy
Connecting Rods: Forged Steel Alloy
Engine Management System: Denso Fuel and Ignition System
Fuel: Methanol
Background
The Toyota Indy V8 is an all-new engine designed from a "clean sheet of paper" for competition in the Indy Racing League (IRL) IndyCar Series beginning in 2003. The 3.5-liter, naturally aspirated power plant will make its racing debut in the 2003 season-opening Toyota Indy 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway in March. The Toyota Indy V8 was designed, built and developed by Toyota Racing Development (TRD), U.S.A. in its 47,000-square-foot Costa Mesa, Calif., facility. Dynamometer testing began in February 2002, and the engine was tested in a race car for the first time in July 2002.
Design of the Toyota Indy V8 draws heavily on experience gained with Toyota's successful CART racing engines. The high-rpm, turbocharged engines earned 21 victories and 23 pole positions from 1999 to 2002, including the CART FedEx Championship Series Driver's (Cristiano da Matta) and Manufacturer's Championships in 2002. The Toyota RV8F and its predecessor, the Toyota RV8E (used in competition in 2000) are the only American-designed and built engines to win in CART competition during the past 22 years.

This is the Indy Racing League motor angle grinding only (ovals), CART still run the 2.65 litre turbo V8's.

Ah okay, so this extremely awesome piece of machinery is going to be used in those mind-numbingly boring races where they belt around a banked oval for hundreds upon hundreds of laps like in NASCAR?

Aaagh, quick before this gets out of hand!!!
Indy cars: NA V8 IRL, ovals only including INDY (the real one)!!
Champcars: Turbo V8 CART, ovals and "real tracks" including the Gold Coast street circuit.
The angle grinding can be a bit boring but the last 20 laps can be just AWESOME quite often. Don't forget that the cars actually do drift on oval tracks at 350+ Km/hr.
AND THAT'S REAL DRIFTING BOYS, NOT THE HANDBRAKE AND CHUCK IT IN CRAP!!!!!!!!!!!

Ok, thanks for that ! But are they still classified as INDY cars?
If not, its a bit silly of them calling it Indy on the Gold Coast...

Yeah, but the Gold Coast track can hardly be called an oval now is it?

The Champcars that run on the Gold Coast were called Indy cars a few years back. They had a blue with the owners of Indianapolis and stopped racing there. A new series - Indy Racing League started run by the Indy owners and these were given the name Indy cars.
So the Gold Coast race shouldn't be called Indy, it's just another one of those marketing ploys because just about the whole world identifies with Indy.

you just havn't watched enough of it, when i first watched some of them i thought the same, but after a little while you realise that they don't have to concerntrate as much on following the track and think more about racecraft (drafting etc) i have seen them go 4 cars abreast around corners and the amount of place changing is unbeliveable

Nope, I have watched enough of it. Generally watching an race on a banked bowl makes me fall asleep. Great, they are drifting at 250kph+, for the 169th time.
I can appreciate the speed but it just doesn't do anything for me. I'd much rather watch a GTP race, or a Le-Mans style race.

Did anyone see the ex-Indy car turbo for sale? I think it was Indy car. Either that or an old F1 turbo...I read it a while ago now.
They said it cost approx $50,000 to build and were selling it for $2990. Just to say you have an Indy/F1 turbo would be good enough for me!
Would it fit in a Soarer??
