A mate an I need a laptop to tune our cars, thing is that for $<400 i can get a total shitter that will only be good for tuning my car.
If i double this amount i can get a fairly good unit that i can use with my camera. (not be ashamed to take in public??)
Looking at paying <$1000. Preferably <$800
What laptops are good brands, what have you had good experiences with?
There is a Toshiba 110 CT (libretto??sp) in the for sale section but i am worried that my big hands will not type well on the keyboard and the screen will be too small to show all engine parameters at once.

i saw a laptop in the for sale area a few days ago, i imagine it was the same one. that was a complete rip off.
go to www.laptop.com.au they have a good range of secondhand laptops and they have warranty as well as insured shipping anywhere in aus for $25
otherwise go to a computer auction

librettos' can be a pain. and not reliable - noisy HDD's too
an early dell series are not bad and easily under $1k.
ibm thinkpads are also pretty good - also under $1k - prolly more hard going than the dells.
just watch the batteries, try and get one with a working battery, otherwise if you've got to get another/get it recoed you'll be up for some $$$

Gateway also made a nice laptop before they went bust. I've seen these plastic mats for keyboards(kinda like mobile phone covers) that protect your keyboard, might be an idea in a workshop(cant remember where I saw them tho, some computer show or something. IBM thinkpads are also really nice, very thin. As to fitting all the specs on the screen at the same time I'd say you want a laptop that can do a resolution of 1024x768, problem with that is laptops that do that are usually only 1-2 years old, so I'm not sure if you could get something under $1K...

What sort of resolutions can you run with say 6Mb video card??
i'd at least want 1280 x 960.
I'm leaning towards a toshiba as motec suggest them as the tuning computer.
How durable are laptops on the whole?? Would you leave one in your garage???
