Where is the coil on a camry? more : which cable for -ve? Fri, 09 May 2003 23:10 Go to next message
Heya guys,

Well I've got my little digital tacho built and went about trying to install it this morning(please no questions as to y I'm putting a digital tacho in old camry please Very Happy ..) tooling around with the ecu to get the low voltage out would be a pain in the ass so I went looking for the -ve on the coil, but I couldn't find the coil, now the coil comes off the centre lead of the dizz right?(I hope..), problem is that the centre lead seems to feed back into the same unit, is it possible to have the coil integrated in the dizzy?(pardon my ignorance..) Anyway attached is a photo of the engine if you can help me locate the coil that would be great.

Specs : 1987 Camry SV20, engine the all powerful 1S-Ci

Thanks guys,

Alch

From memory the ignitor is a transistor stuck on the outside of the dizzy (I've got one of those engines rusting away in the backyard, I'm too lazy to go look! Twisted Evil )

Ok guys I've hunted around for a while on the net and cant find a wiring diagram for the dizzy, I've taken a photo and was hoping that someone with this engine, or who knew could tell me which of these cables was the -ve on the coil that I can patch a tacho onto(and I thought this was going to be easy Smile...)

Get out the multimeter and have a stick around! If you don't have a multimeter, especially seeing as you work at dick smith, buy one, it won't break the bank and they do come in handy...

I think the black/red wire might be the one, have a look inside the dizzy and see if it's connected to the - side of the coil.

Yes I've got a multimeter Razz I was just abit worried as I thought that one side of the dizzy has rather large voltages(not sure about the current..) in it. I might pop the lid off and have a look, I was hoping to find a connection on the outside though so I could just splice the cable. On a good note found an appropriate hole in the firewall to push the cable through and hooked up the right leads from the ignition, and got the actual unit installed next to the dash, so the morning was pretty good, cept in the arvo my team got our butts kicked in soccer, but thats another story......

Thanks guys,

Alch

Just for those who are curious(doubt many have a 1S-Ci though) its the blue wire for the -ve Razz Got the tacho in and it works like a charm, might post a pic later on.
