Hello,
Just wondering if anyone here has tried using the Koni
range of shock absorbers for the AE86 Sprinter?
I have heard that the koni fitments not externally
adjustable (internal adj only).
Was considering getting these, and would like to know
if anyone has tried these items on their car.
good, bad or pain in the ####??
Thanks
James

Hmmm ... I didn't really see the need for coil over suspension because I'm too lazy to change settings themselves.
I've got a full suspension set-up by Fulcrum suspension which consists of Koni shocks & Whiteline swaybars etc.
I've yet to take it out on the track however they are great for the street as in comfortable ride, all tyres maintain grip through corners (maybe not so good if you want to drift - I don't) however my initial impression is that they were quite soft.
I am sure you could go for stiffer components but obviously you'd compromise your ride.
As for adjustability, I've yet to look into it ... just enjoying the absence of bunny-hopping.
I've heard similar things about the Whiteline suspension set-up, a bit soft as well but made with Australian roads in mind.
Front sits around 330 and the rear 320 from what I recall ... here's an idea as to the ride height (I'm running 15" BTW):

Koni Sport fronts are externally adjustable, but all the rear sets are push up and rotate to adjust type so theyre not too hard to change the setting...seemed to go ok in all the sprinters Ive had

Heya Dodgy Haro & IRA11Y,
Thanks very much for the info.
I've been looking for a reasonably priced AE86 and just managed
to find one. A truly great car but in my case, the suspension is shot. Its running some (cant seem to find the brand) make of coil overs in the front (un adjustable) with uneven dampening. - dont quite match the rear either.
Over here in WA, i have been told both the front and rear and
not adjustable. - this really leaves me to question how i'm
going to be adjusting the thing once its set - esp the front.
Been offered part numbers ( 86 1991SPORT - front, 80 2437SPORT
- rear). I'm really (really) hoping the fronts are going to be adjustable.
Thanks guys.
Regards
James

There is an externally adjustable (top of strut) koni that can go in the 86 - I don't have the part number with but could find it time - I believe it is a short stroke unit and does require that the casing be modified a little.
As for the rear it only takes a few minutes to undo the bolt that holds the shock in place (please have the car jacked up) and rotate the thing around, put it back on and you have adjusted the rear!
Actually whiteline should be able to tell you these part numbers, give them a call at their Minto facility.
Cheers

The Koni sports that fit straight into the AE86 are internally adjustable only. The only externally adjustables for the front are from an AE92 and require a spacer to be machined and inserted under the cartridge or the strut housing to be shortened.

How much lower are the king springs compared to the whiteline ones? Do they match the koni shock rates very well?
