Yes, a 2 litre turbo engine can be legally fitted to any RWD Celica in Queensland.

It works like this for engine conversions (sub 1300kg car):
- vehicle weight (kg) x 3.0 = maximum engine cc (naturally aspirated).
- vehicle weight (kg) x 2.5 = maximum engine cc (forced induction).
As you can see, a 2 litre turbo engine won't be a problem for any Celica.
Don't bother talking to Qld Transport, they wouldn't know a turbo from a grande latte. Speak to a certified engineer - they understand the rules and what they mean. I can provide contact details if you like.

Is legal, tho you'll need a blue-plate and certification from an engineer if you want legit rego.
i've bought Helmann's 1979 RA with 1G-GTE (auto) installed in it. Blue-plate had three codes (LA3 & two others) noted on it. (sorry - too dark to go wandering outside to peer under the bonnet to check)

the scary thing is because it is 2l and the old engine is 2l, you don't actually have to upgrade the brakes or anything else.
That's right. Bolt her in. Get the blue plate and drive away.
On a similar note. If the 1jz-gte was 54cc smaller in capacity it would be legal to fit in an ra40 in qld.
(07) 3253 4851 this is the number for qld transport modification section. I sugest u call them for further info.

So if you do a swap into an RA65 2.4L you don't have to touch the brakes?

I thought the brake upgrade had to do with the engine power output no its capacity?
If it was just on capacity, what would you do then if you put in a larger capacity engine that was not as powerful as the last??

I discussed brake upgrades with an engineer when I started my 2JZ project. Apparently if your vehicle has a certain ADR (can't remember which one) which was introduced in 1977, you don't have to upgrade your brakes. For pre-77 vehicles it's a different story; I didn't ask about that though since my car is an 84 model. So get yourself a post-77 RA23/28/40 and you're laughing!

Ok just got off the phone with a gentleman called John Keen, he's a mobile engineer. He told me to do the 1ggte upgrade into a 1977 ra28 the following is required:
- Run all emission gear
- Install a cat
- Install a unleaded fuel restrictor
No brake upgrade is required, though it will be done.
Got a price from All Jap on a late model 1ggte (just engine) for $1250. Anybody think this is reasonable?
I wonder how much insurance will end up being?

$1250 is a good price these days. Just make sure it's working right.
I pay $750 for full comp with Shannons.

Hey
I have an TA23 with a gen 1 1GGTE in int, unfinished up North (Darwin) and will be bringing it down at the end of the year.
Would love to see any guys/girls? with 1ggte in anything, and to see what it will be like.
I also plan on doing a CT26 high flow single turbo conversion at a later stage, as I have the turbo, ready for a high flow........
