4.875:1 how bad is it going to be? Mon, 12 May 2003 04:20 Go to next message
Hello, i'm working through a hilux diff conversion into the RA28.

Almost there but waiting on a gearset (part of the group buy currently going on).

I'm debating putting it in with the original 4.875:1 gears for now as really want to run the Celica at the creek on the 28th.

How bad is this ratio going to be? Currently 4.1:1

Cheers
Joel

It's going to suck on the highway! Around town it shouldn't be too bad though (chuck it in 5th).

i got sick of 4.11-1 becuase it sucked on the highway, other than that i thaught it was awesome for 'racing' and keeping revs up for spirited corners

i now have 3.9, which is just as bad for my purposes Confused

My Suggestions (tm):

1. Get a job for a construction company - with gearing like that on normal sized (not 4WD) tyres, you'll be able to pull any thing, any time

2. Use a T56 gearbox, and just forget 1st - .50:1 6th gear should fix the highway issues

3. Probably forget 1st gear nearly all the time

4. Choose some sensible gearing!

5. Fit monster truck tyres - not only will it LOOK cool, you'll have a genuine (although not likely legal) excuse for doing it

6. Save the trouble of having a gearbox - attach the clutch straight to the tailshaft Evil or Very Mad

My Crown has a 4.875:1. It is shocking on the highway, doing well over 4000 rpm on the highway. Even a 5th gear won't help much.

But then it's a Crown - it doesn't NEED to conform to conventional standards!

Hey! The indicator switch is in the steering wheel. How's that for unconventional?

But seriously, 4.875:1 will drive you nuts.
