1JZ-GTE into Holden's with Red/Blue Motors Mon, 12 May 2003 08:03 Go to next message
Gday fellas
I am soon going to purchase an LJ Torana (although I am still after one if anyone knows of one, must be 2 door) that I am intending on putting a late model turbo motor into
After seeing the TRD-Kingswood and looking at the specs of the 1JZ-GTE I am very interested in putting this into my car
Has anyone done anything similar to this?
I think I saw someone in here with a VL and a 1JZ-GTE and of course the TRD-Kingswood.

Can anyone help at all with this?
With 3" exhaust, front mount, and a boost controller in a 1050kg car it should be a ton of fun! or just over Laughing
Also I would REALLY like this car to be manual so any solutions for this would be great
Thanks in advance
Dane

Well, at the risk of getting a bullet to the head, a Nissan engine would be easier/cheaper to fit. RB20DET would likely do the trick, so long as you remembered some 4.11 diff gears, decent intercooler, up the boost, remap the box, big exhaust. In it's favour, they're cheaper to buy (manual especially!) and you can get ready made engine mounts etc. to stick them straight in (RB30 conversion parts).

That said, a 1JZ would be a nicer choice, but has a few issues. A manual halfcut/package is likely to be pricey, although adapting a W58 would be cheaper and should be fine in a light car. Also, the 1JZ is a chunkier bugger, and I'd imagine would take a bit of brutality on the sump etc. to clear the steering etc. - but go ahead, do it, and it should be a great thing - make sure you remember to replace the Torana diff though! Evil or Very Mad

Actually I don't think the JZ series engines are any bigger than RB series. Don't bother comparing a 1JZ to an RB20, they're worlds apart! The 1JZ is a better engine than the RB25 for less money, so it seems like a good idea to me. The only real downside is you won't be able to get off-the-shelf conversion parts, but they're not that hard to fabricate so it's not a big deal really.

I love LJ's (espcially XU-1's, they're my favorite of favorite cars!) Surprised

I've never heard of anyone putting a turbo in one, will be interesting.

Good luck.

Castlemaine Rod Shop sell a kit to do the RB30E and RB30ET conversion, its pretty straight fowards, but some massaging in the engine bay is needed to fit the turbo RB in

i dont see why a 1JZ wouldnt be feasable, i havent had much experience bt they dont look much bigger than the RB30 series engines

I never mentioned an RB25 - they DO seem to be overpriced and weak as piss. RB20's seem to take the abuse a bit better than the 25s, but still neither comes close to a 1JZ Smile

I was just making the point that the 1JZ is better than the RB25, which obviously is better than the RB20! The RB20 is a big and heavy engine for a 2 litre; you're better off with a 1G if you want a small six.

I was actually going to mention the 1G but you beat me to it Very Happy It does have the advantage of having a short stroke (like the RB20), therefore being more revvy, if you like that kind of thing. Plus they're damned cheap!

Does anyone have a busted 1JZ block that I could possibly borrow to dummy fit into an engine bay?
In the Sydney/Central Coast/Newcastle region?

Best idea ever - replacing the boat anchor red motor with the 1JZ. Wouldn't consider the RB20 - not in the same street.

Have done a 1JZ into VL so shouldn't be much harder to do the Torana. Main problem would be clearance around the steering box.

Engine mounts and sump will have to be custom made but I can send photos of the VL mounts and sump to give you some ideas.

EDIT - just remembered LJ's had rack & pinion steering - it was the HQ's that have the steering box.
