Hi guys,
im gonna look at a $700 Celica LT tommorrow and i need to know how to look for rust. Im no car expert so can some1 please outlines some of the places to look for rust in a celica like this and what are the tell-tail signs of structural rust etc.
They said that they have fixed alot of the rust already however claim there is still some rust remaining in it.
Thanks so much!!

old celica = rust,
its everywhere m8, but main points look around rear guards, around fron't and rear windows, fron't of bonnet, bottom of doors. usual place in all cars, just look over the whole car in good light for any inconsistancy in the paint work

hmmmm - rust and ta22's.
check around the windscreens - one of the biggest signs of structural rust (and very hard to eliminate totally).. it will probably mean there is rust down in the firewall (in my experience).
pull up all the carpets to check the floor pan.
check along under the front of the car - the sub-frame can rust out in the front and make the front end not very safe.
as always - check in front of and behind the wheels (especially behind the front wheel and in front of the back wheel)..
that's all I can think of for now.. but in many years I am yet to find a cheap ta22 with no rust.. unfortunately they are very prone to rust.
I've always steered clear of coastal locations when looking for old cars, for obvious reasons..
good luck! - take a magnet for the old magnet test ..
my 2 cents anyways...

I have never seen a rusted subframe or firewall. It would have to be a VERY dodgy TA22 to have rust there. Places I would check are around the screens, drip rails, front of bonnet, behind rear tail lights, and the bottom of the guards, doors, sills, quarters.

look in the sills under the doors, for some reason there is drain holes there that have been plugged with rubber stoppers
Infront of the rear wheel is another spot because the rubber seals against the window often dissapear over the years and water goes down the inside of the panel and because all these drain holes are plugged it sits and rusts.
The front guards, behind the front wheel the guard folds back on itself and a lot of dirt and mud flick up in there and just sits. eventually rusting it from the inside. I'm modifying my guards to cut this bit off.
It will be a good idea to put your hand in all the spots you can't see to check for rust as these cars seem to rust from the inside out.
Good luck.

Beware! When people say "I fixed the rust" they usually mean "I covered the rust with body filler so you can't see it any more". While it may look OK for a while, in six months time the rust will start to come through worse than before and the car will look like crap.
When you check out the car, take one of those thin flexible fridge magnets with you (ie a fairly weak magnet) and stick it to the car in all the spots mentioned above. A magnet will stick to steel, but not body filler! If you find a fair amount of rust, remember there's likely to be a lot more damage than you can actually see and it will cost a fortune to fix it properly. Sadly a lot of TA22's have become victims of dodgy smash repairs and rust.

And RA23's as well! all 3 of mine have fallen victim's to car cancer. One we've (mostly Dad) totally removed the rust from (cut huge holes out and welded back in new metal)
I just don't like calling it rust, I prefer to say speed holes
