Offroad Racing at Singleton NSW, Sunday 25 May

We're racing the buggy at Milbrodale, just south of Singleton on the putty road, about 2 hours from Windsor.
Alot of the guys run 4AG's and 20Vs, as well as heaps of SR20s, EJ20's etc.
We dont have our hands on a 4AG yet so we're still running our poor old datsun L series but we've got heaps better suspension than most and should still be competitive.
happy to answer any q's people might have.
Rivmasta.

Just found out that pit passes for this meeting will only be $15 and I think entry for the day without the pit pass is free.
Im hangin for this race - spent most of the night last night stipping and rebuilding the steering rack, re packing all bearings and CVs, replacing brake shoes etc.
Now all we need to do is put the engine and gearbox back in, fuel tank and lines, radiator, dash, seats, floor, roof, selector, steering brakes, intercom, panels, nerf bars, crash bars, shocks and we're ready to race!
its gonna be a long weekend!

yeah - aside from the wiring its almost a full strip down after every race - full nut and bolt check, clean and repack CV's, bearings blah blah etc etc. its a pretty long list.
we got the car back in one peice - only the cockpit to put back in and bolt the floor up, and we didnt do that cause we couldnt be bothered. it only takes a couple of hours to completely strip and about 9 hours to clean everything up and rebuild the car.

Weve got the rebuild down to a fine art. bear in mind the race car is nothing but barwork and fibreglass. Once the panels are off its easy to get to every nut. We built it that way!
Engine swap can be done in 10 mins, Ive seen guys do full gearbox swaps in 15! We usually have 4 guys working on the car, and everyone knows thier jobs. Good crew makes it so easy.

Will there be any Chenowth or Jimco buggies there? I'd love to see one of those things going!
Cheers

Naa - No chenowths, no jimcos. Actually, probably no A-Arm cars at all.
The Finke Desert Race is only a couple of weeks away so the big dollar teams are setting up for that and wouldnt want to risk bending them so close to the biggest offroad race in the southern hemisphere!
Its only gonna be us poor beam buggies, sedans & 4WD's running... Mind you, it means we'll have a shot at taking out class 2 if the 'slap together' engine holds together.... 11/1 comp on standard fuel... Hmmmmm....
Engine swap in 10 mins - easy! 4 bolts to undo the crash bar, 6 bolts for engine/gearbox mounts. disconnect radiator, fuel lines and wiring (which is all on one plug) and rip it out!
Exhaust is one unit with the engine. The muffler sits about 100mm above the rocker cover. Gotta love mechanics gloves!
Eeeeasy!

Hey Ed & Rob - Ive just contacted the promotor to find out that there are only 15 *&(#*&$ entries!!!!
Means that there will probably be about 20 on the day - its gonna be a small meeting.
Mind you, the drive up the putty road is worth it!

24 cars started - 7 finished!!!! Some bloody brilliant racing!!! 3 cars out due to roll overs (me included), 5 cars out due to trees jumping out in front of them - one of which ripped the engine and gearbox out of the back of the car and tore the main roll hoop out of the car! and most of the rest out with busted gearboxes or diffs.
Our roll was pretty funny - fast left about 70degrees flat chat in 2nd - about 70kms an hour by the time you apex the corner. I went in too fast, through the steering brake on too early trying to wash some speed off and ended out climbed an embankment on the inside. Crunch smash tinkle - you know how it is.
1 full roll with a piroette on the nose. Suffering today with some massive bruising, a black and blue testie from the crutch strap and a bruised ego as well!! ha ha!

I could never have gotten to finke to begin with! Just the cost in towing the car, entry fee, race fuel and accomodation is more than our budget for the year - let alone maintenance costs!!!!
Were going next year as crew for another car, hopefully we can race it hte year after that.
pics will be posted on my website by the end of the week.

Busted a nerf bar and broke a weld on a lower front trailing arm. Bit surprising that the weld split, normally the arm breaks. Looks like the moly wasnt pre-heated when it was welded to the mild. At least we can fix it ourselves - its not gonna cost us anything.
Other than that, bent the roof numbers and broke an exhaust mount. Some good bruising on my shoulders and nads from the harness and a good bruising of hte ego!!!
