i have been thinking this is not positive yet but i might sell my ae86 and buy a
mazda rx7 series 4 or 5,
or may be a sw20 mr2 non turbo,
or a 92 180sx what do you guys think ?
its just that these cars are newer.
i love my 86, and this is only a slight think.
i have no clue what i am going to do, and only 5% sure about this so please don't ask me how much am i going to sell or anything just wanting ideas what i should do and about HOW much the cars up there will set me back.
I still love toyota and this is a thought.

Depends how much money you have really, the series 4 & 5 RX7s are very nice cars, they would have to be one of my favourite cars! I don't know much about the MR2s although i expect they would be $15000 or more for the second generation

seems you like sporty handling - so MR2 ( na or turbo ) - or a ma70 supra would be my pick - then a Gt4 if you like AWD turbo fun

a mr2 na seems interesting anyone know approx how much a sw20 non turbo would cost ?
i could put out that money on modding my 86 but the resale value won't be worth it.

they are around the 15 mark i think - do a quick search on the trady post
I think 22K would get you the turbo ones - and they absolutely hammer
If i ever go a 2 seater car - thats what ill be getting !

i see.
Anyone know if the handling on the mr2 is greater then the 86 ?
or would modding the suspension of the 86 make it better. I prefer which can handle not straight line speed as such.

the Mr2 has a lot more modern Setup underneath it - So depending where you want to go - bith are capable - but MR2 modded would probably win the handling war IMH - youd just have to watch for the bum end swinging around without warning - something that happens with rear mounted engine cars

Bah! Humbug!
Well, you are right in that you won't get the money back ... I know I won't ...
Guess you have to weigh it up ... I like my car and wouldn't trade it for the world ... afterall, I could own something else but then it wouldn't be a unique Panda Levin ...
Dunno ... in 2 stage of minds ATM, either spend more $$$ on better engine OR consider a side project ... am thinking either Datsun 240Z, MR2 AW11, Mazda Rotary (R100 or RX3 Coupe) or Rotarising a KE10 or KE30 ...
Ah ... to dream ... but it all comes back to the Hachi ... I get a good feeling each time I just walk up to her for a drive.

RX7 2nd gen! for sure.
Local ones are pretty expensive. 10-12k for a series 4.
14-17k for a series 5 (turbo models).
Though imported ones are shit cheap. I mean shit cheap.
check out prestigemotorsport.com.au
under the current stock/past stock thingy.
something like 10k will get you a very good condition one. If you are willing to wait till the end of the year or next year, you could score yourself a series 5.
HOwever, the build quality of these vehicles aren't that great, and things often break down(logicon problems, interior bits). Because it's a rotary, it's got it's own mechanical problems too. Cold start issues, maintenence costs and intervals, and frequent engine rebuilds are just a few.
HOwever, they are a joy to drive, and my favourite weekend car! (mine spends most of the time in the garage.)

Are you aware that the earliest 2nd gen MR2s can be imported from japan under the 15yrs+ rule from Jan next year? I wouldn't pay $15k for one now because it will only be worth half that when the market becomes flooded with grey imports.
Nice car though. I'd hold off till they come here in numbers...
(turbo models should also start appearing at much lower prices too)

if the toss up is between the series 4 and 5 rx7, spend the estra to get the series 5 (turbo of course), from what i have heard there were a LOT of improvements from 4 to 5 (think vn commondore to vp if you like)
or save for a while and buy a series 6!!! you know you want to.
who care if you wont get good resale on your 86, i have resigned myself to the fact that i will never sell mine, so there is that problem solved.
the only car i want to go up to is a honda s2000 hardtop.
i was thinking a 7mgte soarer, but those things weigh 1800 kilos (or as much as two sprinters)
definately have a good look for imports taht will fall under the 15 years plus rule, if you don't have a hatred of nissans, you could get a nice ca18det 180sx/silva pretty soon under the 15 year rule.
good luck

the improvements are great...
But it doesn't really leave the series 4 for dead.
10kw power gain... way nicer exterior, slightly curvier interior.
Not bang for your buck as much a series 4. With the money spent on a series 5, you could get some pretty nice mods to your series 4 to make it a machine to be reckoned with.
