i would like to know what other engines can fit straight into a 81 RA40, have tried the 18RGU very good motor but just want to try something else.

I am pritty sure that a 1G of some description would fit in it. but that is not a straight swap, a bit of work to do that swap. a 22re would but the 18rg is better then that so you'll be going backwards.
I am quite sure if you want to do an engine 'upgrade' then some work will be involved. like engine mounts, wiring, exhaust, that sort of thing
as above and you say you have a budget of about $2000 so your options are pretty limited to do a conversion to a 1g it will cost around $5000 so maybe you would be better off trying to do efi on your 18r-g
