icon5.gif  18RGU Problems need help? Thu, 15 May 2003 12:56 Go to next message
i am having trouble with 18rgu, i recently ripped out the 18RC and brought a 18rgu from the reckers.
a mechanic said i have low pressure in the third and four cyclinder. but he also said you can run it around for a bit longer, but the motor is running really bad.
to get the car to even move you have to give it alot of revs.
but when slowing down the motor sounds like it going to die on me.
i will proberely get it rebuilt but does anyone know a place in western australia where i can get it done?

p.s. what modifications could i do to the motor if i get it rebuilt.

i would be greatfull if you email back at triptek@iprimus.com.au
or jsut reply to this.

Try the search option.
Also it depends on what sort of engine you want, will it be drive-able or do you want a 1/4 mile screamer.
This sounds like a good opportunity to learn how to build engines.

Sounds like a blown head gasket to me.
Is the motor covered by any warrenty? If so then they should fix it for you.

I agree with M.J.H.

I own a celica with an 18RG, which I rebuilt (standard) the motor in. After about 20000kms it did exactly the same thing. The head gasket was burnt something chronic between 3 and 4. My advice would be not drive the car until you get it fixed, as driving the car will &^%* the head between the two bores.

If you have a spare 2 to 3G lying around then do a complete rebuild. If not and the engine still shows good comp on 1 and 2 then pull the head and check out if the heads warped. If the heads ok whack on a new gasket with plenty of Hylomar, and dont forget to re-tension the bolts after 500 to 1000kms. (Obviously clean all surfaces thoroughly b4 re-assembly).

While it is apart you could check out the 'slop' in the bores and ridge build up on the top of the bores, this will give you a sign of what condition the engine is in.

I think a new gasket was about $60-$70 and the Hylomar $14.

If the head is warped badly then expect to fork out $400 plus to have it str8nd. Cheaper to get another head.

if the head is warped you could get away with getting it shaved flat.. it costs fuck all. only bout 40 bux.. i got my head checked before i put it on and i got one valve regrouned and the head shaved flat.. thats all you need to do providing it is not to badly warped
