can someone explain the pros and cons of each of these systems?

and EXACTLY what they DO?

A disctributor is that big round thing with plug leads coming out of it... whereas many cars use coils connected strait onto the plugs instead. The best place to drive the trigger is from the camshaft (i.e. either on the front of the cam or where the dizzy used to be) rather than the crank, as it's necessary for sequential injection, so that the engine knows which TDC is the firing stroke.
