MA61 fuel delivery Sun, 23 June 2002 12:26 Go to next message
Those of you that know of the fuel delivery system in MA61's.

To what HP does the stock fuel pump flow and what are upgrade options?

How many people are using the stock system with great success and supporting 300+ HP?

Does it need to be upgraded above 300 HP?

Your insight would be most helpfull.

I have the stock fuel pump and its supporting enough fuel at 14psi on a 7mgte without any hassles.

Just make sure you dont run the tank too low cause that's how my last fuel pump died.

Good idea to put in a fuel pressure gauge, best thing i've done. You can tell immediately when you start sucking air.

Have you got the 7mgte in yours. We should hook up for a cruise or just check out each others conversions.

G'Day,
We're also running the stock fuel system in my brothers girlfriends(yep, thats right!) MA61 with the 7MGTE. Have encountered no probs, also running up to 14psi. We did the conversion ourselves, started first time, runs like a dream. Couple of questions for you guys though, if you can help
Were you able to get the digital tacho to work?
How accurate is the speedo?
If you have an auto, does it behave?
Does your cruise work?

Be interested to know how you got around some of these problems.
Have not had it on a dyno yet, would be interesting...

Cheers

He he he......that's awesome!! What top chick!!!

Well, i'm after the same answer for my tacho as well. I'm running a microtech computer though. I've put an oscilliscope on another ma61 at the point where the tacho signal goes into the dash. The signal is the typical negative side of the coil pulse with the huge EMF spike. I put the scope onto the tacho output of the microtech and it was the same. So i hooked em together but it still didn't work.

To your other questions, i have a manual, so the speedo is good. It shouldn't change unless you are running the 7mgte auto. Are you? If so you need to give the auto a speed signal,i've heard other people with the same problem.

I also dont have cruise control.

Good to hear there arew others with the greatest and easiest conversion!!!!

birdofprey: hey, i know the guy that used to own the mk2 that u use for your avatar!

300 hp at the crank or at the wheels? It should be good for 300 at the wheels. You would definately want to be looking at upgrading after that point.

Red2Door: I've not gotten the tacho to work, ended up putting in a small 8krpm autometer tacho. I have not heard of anyone getting a mk2 tacho to work with a 7mgte, digital or otherwise. My speedo tends to bounce around at around 70kph, apart from that seems about 5% out at 100kph according to an auto engineer. Don't have an auto, have a stock cruise unit, but not installed at the mo. 14psi should go great, pretty much at the upper limit for efficiency on the turbo tho. I put down 170kw at the wheels at 11psi, so 14 should be over 200.

I think the main problem with the tacho is that the 5m is single coil, whereas the 7mgte is multicoil. I've not been able to compare outputs from either, but there must be something that the digital tacho cannot interpret.

Guys,
Yeah, we're running an auto. Damn thing shifts out of first almost straight away Sad I think the sped sensor is the answer to my problems but I remember hooking it up. From memory, it went from the instrument cluster to the ecu and also the cruise. Maybe its not working right. Speedo was showing high speeds, ie 200+ when doing 150 -160. Also when you switched cruise on, the car would just take off without controlling the speed at all.(Scary but fun!)
What type of signal should be coming from the speed sensor and how can I check it? Maybe I need to change gear ratio on the speedo cable...
And as for the tacho, someone must know how to get it to work, where's all the electronic geeks (I mean geniuses!)

Cheers

Yep that speed sensor input should come off your instrument cluster. Well that's what Jim from Croyden Autosports says, it works out, i can see his point. Maybe give him a call at Croydon Autosports in Sydney.

I cant understand though why the tacho doesn't work. I understand the 7m has 3 coils instead of one but the Microtech output is a combined signal, ie one pulse every ignition fire. You can also do this by connecting the negative primary side of each coil with a diode on each wire before they come together into one. This is esentially the same signal as the single coil for the 5m.

A guy in the states who has also done the conversion says to use a MSD Tacho converter. I've never heard of such things in Australia. Anyone???

Hows your brakes going guys?? Mine doesn't stop. Any ideas on upgrades?

Actually you just reminded me something!

I might start a new thread but i'll tell it to you guys.
My mate just bought a W58 the manual 5 speed from an ma61 and it has a gear ratio converter actually attached to the gearbox, its only small.

Mine is manual, why doesn't mine have it? Both boxes came from cars that were originally manual.

Hey,
Does the gear convertor look like a factory job? Someone may have used an aftermarket convertor after changing their diff ratio or tyre diameter.
I have seen diagrams for the MSD tach convertors that came with my Billet Dizzy and 6AL module (for a big block Smile ) but it seemed to be mainly related to different american car ignition systems. There maybe one that works though.I'll have a look when I get home.
Brakes are OK, but some fade occurs when it is driven hard
BTW what did the W58 cost?

Cheers

Yep the converter is definietly a factory job, another guy i know bought one from toyota. His W58 cost $300,

i'm so jealous it was an excellant bargain!!!! The gear selectors feel like a brand new porche. I'm pissed of i didn't get it.

Yeah it would be great if you could dig up those diagrams on the MSD tacho converter.
