Hi all,
wondering if any of you have had this problem or can give me some advice. My RA23 has suddenly decided that she feels the need to keep the "CHG" light displayed. At the same time this happened I noticed that the tacho, fuel and temp gauges are also not working properly. The tacho seems to be working at a different scale. For example when you rev the engine to about 4,000 RPM (what I guess to be 4000rpm!) the tacho only displays about 1500 rpm. Likewise the fuel and temp guages move up to just above the "empty" and "cold" marks despite a full tank and warm engine. The heater fan does not work as well. All of this happened as I restarted the car after a brief stop this morning.
All items above were working normally prior to the stop.
Despite this everything else seems to be fine (engine idle and performance OK, lights, blinkers, wipers, demister etc are all OK.
My limit of electrical knowledge ends at the fuse box - which I have checked and found to be OK.
Can anyone shed some light on this before I take her to an auto electrician.
Regards
Donjmo

This is a fairly common problem with old Celica's, it's almost certainly a bad earth! I had this happen with my RA23 a while back. Check the battery->chassis, battery->engine, chassis->engine and dash->chassis earth points are properly attached and free from corrosion.

Norbie you legend!!
Don't know which it was but a couple of the places you said to check were loose. Probably not a bad idea for everyone that reads this to check out the state of electrical connections in their cars - saved me a few bucks at the auto electricians!
