Is overfilling a gearbox a problem? Fri, 16 May 2003 23:33 Go to next message
Hi, I think I may have overfilled my W50. I cant get out the plug at the bottom or the filler plug to check, is this going to cause any major problems? I imaging not having enough oil would not be good for the box, but is having too much bad for the gearbox?

How did you fill it if you cant get the plug out?
Anyway there is a little vent hole at the top of the box anyway, so if any oil really needs to get out it will!

Curtana if the bolt is too tight its just a simple matter of getting enough length on the spanner....simple....

just hook up 2 even 3 spanners together to get enough leverage and pull away....be carefull not to damage your spanners though

The only problem with overfilling anything is the extra stress that it puts on the oil seals...

Why? The gearbox is not a sealed unit, it has a vent or 2!

hey

I would have thought that if you overfill a gearbox and submerge the gears, or part of the gear to much, it will place to much load on that gear from being to wet. Or it will just cause to much friction, and you will loose a percentage of power in the gearbox.

Not 100% sure though, just a thought...........

IF IN DOUBT WHIPP THE OXY OUT!!!. Try appplying a slight amount of heat to the filler and drain plugs then/or try tapping it with a hammer, but what you really need as stated before is more LEVERAGE.IF the spanner keeps on slipping of it may be worth while investing in single hex sockets.

if you fill it to much it will basically fuck it. its just as bad as not having enough oil in it. for one the seals will have extra stress, the synchros, and dog teeth will be harder to engage, and can even cause overheating problems. as for filling it in the gearstick hole that is bad. the gearstick is in a seperate area , the extension housing and if the oil manages to find its way to the bottom it all wont go in the area you want it. i would not fill a gearbox unless u can get both plugs out, try a rattle gun, dangerous but it works every time just dont strip it Confused

Too much oil is worse than not enough (note that I said 'not enough', not 'none'), for all the reasons already given.
This goes for anything that requires a certain amount of oil.

What I wanna know is, how did you know it needed oil in the first place, if you couldn't undo the top plug?
