I ran my 2tb pretty much soley on Optimax or ultimate with the odd LRP tank now and then and never had issues - ran smoother and more perky with the good stuff too - AND got an extra 40 + km out of a tank

Yeah man but make sure u run premium.....or anything thats 95 RON

as LRP is 95 RON

But if u dont have a cat, unleaded fuel puts out REALLY REALLY nasty nitric and sulfuric crap so i decided not to do it for that reason

I dont reckon u should do it for that reason but yeah it does run fine

as i understand it because the head is aluminium there is steel sleves placed around the valves un like other old cars that have cast iron heads that the fuel afects if u wanted 2 run unleaded in then they whould have 2 be sleved in a simular fashion 2 the 2t head

You're half right. The exhaust valves need hardened valve seat inserts to prevent valve recession when running on unleaded fuel. Any engine with an alloy head has valve seat inserts, but not all of them are of the hardened variety (there's a special name for these which escapes me at the moment). Note that pretty much any Toyota engine built since the early 70's will have hardened valve seats, so unleaded fuel is not a problem. You do need to ensure you have the correct octane though; not all engines are happy on regular unleaded (91 RON), although I ran my old 2T on regular for many years and never had any problems.

As for the emissions issue, LRP is exactly the same as ULP but with extra stuff added (ie anti valve recession agents). That being the case, you're not going to cause any less pollution by using LRP.

what norbie said

norbie i think you're looking for the word "stellite"?

true the valves will hammer out after a while due to the 2T alloy head - but then again not as bad as LPG.

LRP makes the same emissions as ULP, but, dunno about the anti recession agents, it has a lubricant to replace what the lead used to do in fuel (the name of the additive escapes me)

Yup, I heard this from an engineer who works for Shell so it's true for their fuel at least. I'd be surprised if other brands were any different.

Grega, that's the one - stellite! Smile
