18RGeu OIL PUMPS - Heard bad stories, anyone here had problems? Sun, 18 May 2003 06:34 Go to next message
Hey, just the other day my trainer from tafe, who is fairly old (mid 50s-60s) and has probably owned restored and raced any sort of car you can think of, told me that he used to have real oil pump issues on his old 18rgeu hilux.. he says that they are apparently too small and too inaffective. At idle there was about 4psi of oil pressure, and this would hardly rise until hit about 4000rpm when it would suddenly jump up high. He told me to definately not trust the unit i have in my motor, especially if its all second hand. From his opinion this is an inherent problem on these motors, and they just have a poor design. He said he took one off an old Crown and modified it to suit the 18rge, which was a lot more affective. I trust what he says because he really knows what he is talking about, and i have a lot of respect for him.

I am in the process of finishing off my 18rgeu project using a second hand motor and this has really made me think again about the life of it. It needs to be as reliable as possible as rebuilding is not an option until i have saved up.
What i would like to know is what other peoples opinions are about this? Has anyone else had to tackle this problem? what can i do to find out if my oil pump is aging, or what is a decent replacement unit that will work well 110% of the time??
is this a common problem that many 18rg owners just live with???
it would really be good to hear some other peoples thoughts on this as i know a lot of people still have the 18rg/eu and i just want mine to be as safe as possible...

THANK YOU anybody if you have knowledge/experience on this topic because oil pressure will mean the old engine could or could not last the test of time..

Cheers Heaps,
Guy

18R-G's do have oil surge issues, but this is because of poor sump baffling. I haven't heard of anyone having problems because of the pump itself. Mine certainly hasn't given any trouble!

Just did the conversion and the sump that was on the 18rgu had a bulge at the front. which hit the cross member, so I just put the old 18r-c one on. Just have to modify the baffleding a bit to let the oil pick up fit. Not sure if this will cause any trouble.

slightly OT ... but when i had turbo put into my 18R, they replaced the rebuilt pump (was v.low pressure at idle & revs) with a hilux unit (petrol eng, don't know what make/model). volume and pressure of oil (cold or hot) very satisfactory now, even with turbo-with-inline-cooler-oil-line.

I suppose that the RG and R engines shared pumps?

note: had to use (and the modify) the pickup from the hilux pump to fit into the 18R sump.

anyway, your pump sounds like the relief valve is stuffed.

you should really think hard about replacing the pump and valve, as no/low oil pressure will lead to rapid engine death.

What process can you go to to fix this? is it difficult or just machining spots on the inside of the sump?

In one of my pumped RGs I use a 18RC
oil pump
and so far I haven't had a oil problem
just head gaskets.
