Clutch stuffed!! help im at uni

While driving to uni when changing to third the clutch sudenly went soft, and when trying to accelerate the revs just went up wihtout me going faster ie. clutch just slipping.
It drives like the clutch is always partly in and when all the way out never fully engages.
I have to take off very slowly and build up speed as to not make clutch slip.....
Whats wrong?????
Will I be ok to drive home slowly?
There has been a whining noise which I believe was the thrust bearing, could it be this?

Sounds a bit like the fork is busted/bent, or maybe the slave cylinder has popped its guts out and is jammed - crawl underneath (no doubt in the mud, slugs, gravel, etc ) and have a look at the slave cylinder, see if you can stuff it back in (sounds nice, dun'nit!).
Good luck!

You should be right to drive home slowly.... just be careful not to let it slip
Must have been on its way out for a while

In a word your clutch is farked
I had the same thing happen to me in my mark2 i drove it for a week u have about 3mm of accelarator the rest is pure slippage.
It will get you home just dont stab it.
You can adjust something cant remeber what it is (my old man did it, something on or near the gear box.
and it will last a bit longer
i had to get a new pressure plate.
hasnt slipped since.

this is in a sprinter right??
if so, i bet you a dollar that you have collapsed the diaphragm. (spring that applies pressure in the pressure plate)
i did this exact thing recently, punched the clutch first to second, and then SUDDENLY lost about half the grip.
thought it was the plate worn out, but it was the spring.
drove it for a few weeks like this, but it just wasn't fun anymore.
if you wantto do it on the mega cheap, you might be able to just replace the pressure plate, but with all the assing around you might as well change everything.
oh yeah, don't lose the little clips that hold the thrust bearing carrier to the clutch fork, you can only get them from toyota as genuine parts.

If you can push the pressure plate in and out by hand you can safely assume that it is stuffed. These sometimes get cracks in them which will give you the problems you are having.
Best of luck

well it was the pressure plate, it cracked.
The guy at pitwatter clutch, toymods sponsors was very helpful, put it in a press and you could see 2 of the fingers move apart....
been offered a brass button.... hmmm do I really want that though with just a ge.... think it would be a pain in trafic yeah?

Yup a big pain in the ass for city driving. you will end up walking around in circles cos your left led will be so much stronger than the right.
If you want an upgrade, why not just opt for a stronger pressure plate on the standard single plate clutch.

Prior to it cracking if you never had a problem with it slipping, then why go for anything heavier.
You just had bad luck with the last pressure plate. I wouldn't worry about a stronger clutch unless you needed it before it broke

dont go a brass button, ceramic or whatever clutch trust me. firstly, they drive like SHIT and its only a ge not exactly a torque monster. secondly they arent to good for the flywheel which will invariably wear quicker and thirdly it will cause other things to be prone to breakage such as gearbox or diff. best your clutch weras out and replace it then something else its what theyre designed for.
if you want something a little better than stock go for a normal organic clutch with a stronger pressure plate. this is what i have in my gze sprinter and no problems so far. clutch is only a little heavier than standard but grips stronger.
the other thing is you should just do it yourself sprinters are one of the easiest cars to do a clutch on, you took the box out yourself thats all the hard work done!
buy yourself a clutch kit, my prievious kit cost $150 for an Exedy clutch and standard duty pressure plate just as a guide.

guys
if my pressure plate was stuffed, would my symptoms of a spongyish feel to the pedal, and no real "engage" and "disengage" feel be correct?
the fingers are stiff (tested before I put it in) and everything appeared normal.
(BTW the clutch and plate were off a reasonably condition new 1/2 cut, but they did have quite a bit of surface rust on them)
(there is no air inthe system, trust me, and my slave is fine)

i wouldn't go knocking hardcore clutches..mine is beautiful, it's a 4 puck carbide disc, w/ a built up TRD p/p..rated at a safe 'clutch dyno' 252KW and 42kg/m, behind my GZE in my AE86, it's awsome..you have to get used to it, but it drives like a normal clutch..i have to admit, my tailshaft loop baring wasn't the best, and now it's shagged! cos of all the 'clutch shudder' it has when balancing it in car parks etc..but it's not any harder on the pedal..

Shouldn't be any heavier, unless he gets a stronger pressure plate as well. But If you've only got a GE then don't bother. If it doesn't slip then the full face/sprung clutch will be easier to drive and be kinder on the rest of the driveline.
Although I had a organic 5-button on my GTE and it was fine, pulling off, in traffic, whatever, was fairly easy to drive (after the couple of days it took to get used to it).
