I know that this one has been done to death.......but I am unable to find reliable information.

Want to convert 1980 RA40 to vented discs with (at least) opposing piston calipers. After much searching around the wreckers I cannot find any struts that will drop straight in.

Does anyone have any info at all on this conversion.

You help is much appreciated!!

Smile hi vc to vl commodore discs will bolt strait onto an ra40 celica without any mods whatsoever. you only have to make new backing plates to hold what ever calipers you want.
i used volvo 4 spots arount $200 for a good set. this also gives you the ability to run commodore mags which sounds like a strange thing to do but just about every mag available in australia will be available for commodores. the commodore disc gives you the right off set as well, with out any spacers.

I would be careful about the use of custom made "backing plates" for brake calipers, as i have been told there are some very stringent regulations for engineering such modifications. It would be far easier on an old 1976-1980 celica so follow the direct "bolt in" swaps as outlined in the Toymods Tech Articles section.

An engineer will be FAR happier with something that bolts in without making/cutting any metal.

Cheapest upgrade is RT-132 struts and brakes
- Next step up is using the pugeot 405(?) vented discs with spacers in the RT-132 calipers
- Next step up again is replacing the RT-132 calipers with the hilux 4 piston jobbies.

no there isnt.

Please re-read my post and you'll see that the CHEAPER and EASIER option is to use Toyota OEM brakes from a variety of different models. It'll all outlined in the tech articles i linked to.

I too am very cautious about using adapter plates for brake calipers. Invariabley the adapter plate (no matter how thick) will flex under heavy braking. This combined with the heat expansion can cause an inconsistent brake pedal.

Engineers hate them too as you are replacing two fixing points with four. No matter how much thread locking compound or lock-wire you use, there is still a risk.

The VL rear diff sounds interesting though..any thoughts anyone?

Early Celicas like my RA23 use backing plates from the factory, so it can't be too dodgy! The backing plate I made is clearly stronger than the original item (thicker steel with ribbing added) and it uses the same mounting points, so I find it hard to believe it would flex under any conditions. Of course you should discuss this with an engineer before embarking on such a project.

AHH!! BRACKETS! Shocked

Norbie you know i don't doubt that for you a bracket is a well engineered piece of art.

Thankfully you all realised i was referring more to the fact that engineers don't like them cos there are too many variables in strength for them to consider... i didnt mean that flat out brackets are dodgy. Engineers are just lazy and prefer factory stuff.
