Whats everyones thoughts?

I've been noticing an increasing trend towards people buying new cars (FTO, lancer, ect.) and putting stickers under the wing mirrors and calling it fast. These stickers maybe accompanied by an extravogent body kit (with the addition of barrel and trumpet exhust to give beefy sound), or (most likely in the case of FWD cars) and inordinatly large rear wing, sometimes higher than roof level. Do these people just have too much money? Or does the community have a lack of understanding reguarding to making cars perform better? I have no idea how much one of those stupidly large body kits costs, but im sure that is the same amount of money was spent under the bonnet, tehy would perform better, thanks to not adding extra weight, drag from kits.
Are people that work on the older cars out of vouge? Or is it that we find better things to spend out money on.....
I dont know... but id like to hear you thoughts

It's all about looks and what their 'sick' mates are doing.
If it's not, then it buggers me why they buy that crap that has less displacement than a cat in a bathtub.

It's all this modern trend of style over substance! And the fact all cars today look like shapeless blobs, so bodykits give the feeling of "individuality" they sorely lack! Back in the 70's it wasn't how it looked, it was how many horn buttons a car had - just ask any TA22 owner! I like my car to look a bit tired, a bit dirty, like it has gone a few rounds but endured.... And I gotta admidt, I'm sick of getting "lined-up" by excels, lancers etc with bodykits and big exhausts. The MA70 runs a 2.5 inch extremely quiet exhaust so it doesn't attract attention, but everyone thinks they are a chance against it. (the 1JZ does the talking!)

I must be the only one here that doesn't get 'lined up' by that trash. Maybe because of what I drive and it's totally stocko on the outside and quiet.
Somedays I wish they would so I can blow em into the weeds.

by any chance would most these people be asian? hehehehe i'm asian too and i reackon only a tiny portion of them know what goes on under their bonnets. Working in china town i see lots of them nice looking rice cars that get blown away by datto's hehehehe. It's just the "cool" thing to do. Oh yeah they got too much dosh so they probably get ripped off to hehehehe.

Its nice to see that people think like me. Me and my mates all have older cars. Myself a beaten up TA 22, running extractors, full 1.5 inch wiht a straght through, sounds awesome, so i attract a bit of attention. One mate has a '77 VW golf, pretty fast, not much more he can do to it to make it go quick. It has taken godzilla's, VR-X's you name it, only know it to be beaten by a worked VL turbo (but that was only at about 150.... on an off street drag that is). And other mate has a '71 datto 1200 that is faster than the golf, and its running low on comp too!!. I tell ya... new cars dont have style, and dont have the same room for work as old cars. If you spent the same amount of money on a pre '80 car as ppl do on lancers ect.. you would have a screamer (or possibly 2!!!)
i get annoyed.. and satisfyed when new rice burners line me up, and proceed to get deafened by the 2T roar.

well, i think its all healthy. If those people with money didnt get ripped off for their mods, then we would propably have to pay extra to support the industry.
I agree that newer sports cars are pretty shmick tho, tehy are so comfortable too, but there is nothing better than blowing them away in an old battler thats had some TLC.

Les, Did i come across as i was "shooting off", i was mearly seeing if other people shared my view. I wasnt trying to start a 'us and them' discussion reguarding cars and thier modifications, i was trying to maybe understand why people do the things they do to rice cars. Forgive me for trying to understand other motorists, and widen my understanding.
I did not bring race/religion/culture or class into the discussion, because in Melbourne it doesnt seem to be typical of one ethnicity to put stickers onto cars and call them fast. I agree that some body kits look attractive, but they tend not to accuratly reflect the performance of the vehicle. Personally, i think there is no point making a car look fast unles it does (dont advertise what you cant deliver). There is a small portion of these 'rice' cars with body kits that astound my by their performance, and good on 'em if they can afford it.
I think there is a large difference between my thoughts of 'hotting up' cars, and the rest of the communities. I think that hotting up cars is making them go faster, stop quicker, handle better, and more importantly be more reliable (although reliability is all but flushed down the preverbial shitter once performance is increased dramatically.)
I will admit, attracting attention because of a car is good, buy it is not high on MY priorities, maybe to others it is.
So Les, please dont be so defensive, it was good to recieve some comment from the other side of the discussion (being someone who drives a 'ricer'), but please dont think that i was meaning to abuse, degrade or separate ricers from the rest of society.
Good luck to you, and happy driving

Gee, Les is really cut about the asian thing.
For the record, I've evolved my views on ricers. I don't automatically assume an asian is driving one these days.
Quite the opposite really, all I see driving rice these days is blond haired lanky white guys.
But if you feel the need to be picked on and try to see some excuse somewhere to be, then you have some sort of problem.

I know what you guys mean, its the Rice phenomenon thats gripped these new kids nowadays! lol
They see something that looks good and they whack it on, ive seen all my younger brothers school mates talk about how sick a FSE power boost valve and turbo zet are, and how they can outrun a WRX in their dads Commodore, i sit back and laff. It dun matter, as long as theyre having fun, theyll learn later that they wasted their parents money on a riced up garbage car.
I mean here in melbourne we have a lot of international asian students whos parents are ridiculously rich. They do like to show off their wealth with cars. And some of them drive very fast and nice cars, these people i respect, as they purchase a car with balls and do it up nice. I mean i only disslike ricers who think they can outrun everybody and think theyre 1.8L NA lancer or 1.6L Civic is the bom cos it has a 6ft giant wing, altezza lights and a cannonball muffler. You guys are Ghey!
Well asians do have this Rice image, but dont forget the 'FullSick' muzza image. Go down chappel st and tell me how many FullySick muzzas in commodores you see?! LOL 99% are commodores and 99% are driven my muzzas who drop burnouts and think there top shit cos there VL T has a cooler and makes woop woop noises.

on a lighter note...Apollo, regardless of race, Asians created the rice mobile ok..... regardless of how many lanky beach bums actually you see in them nowasays ... good observation however !

I still dont understand what the whole thing is against "rice". Personally I dont like a lot of older cars and i really dont like people who think they're driving a supercar just becuase it has a GEN3 under the bonnet. I love nice bodykits, sometimes even little subtle good looking stickers. But i dont sit there and expect everyone else to have the same taste that i do. I occasionally drive 2 older cars, and regularly 1 apparently "ricey" car. Now let me see, the ricey car is comfier, quieter, faster, better looking, and a lot more joyful to drive. But thats just my opinion. Some of my friends drive and love older cars. I cant see myself driving one of those everyday and liking it, but they can so thats cool.

Well this thread has gotten big quick!
I probably should've said: I did my car to suit myself, not anyone else. I don't really care if people want to add spoilers and shit - if you want to do it and feel happy with it great. Still, whether you drive a stickered up lancer, or a stock commodore with alloys on the front and stock rims (with the burnout tyres on)on the back, or a twin-turboed Celica and you're driving around with a big smile on your face and every day is full of sunshine and the birds are singing and holding hands well it's just wonderful! But when it comes down to it, either your car is fast or it's not and there's no use pretending when the lights go green .

have a look for a bodykit that is 20 years old I don't think there will be any,let alone the car it is fitted to going off cars of today.Old cars were built to last the new stuff we'll have to wait and see. I want to know why people buy cars that they have to (in many cases) totally change the look of with a s@#tload of fibreglass, why not buy something that looks good from the start eg early celica (no body kit could make one look better) It's metal for me not fibreglass!!!!

personly i like the look of some cars with body kits, hey i wouldnt even mind getting an old style one for the RA40
but the people that put them on and then have stickers like motec and NOS shit me when u know that they would never have anything like that in there. and if you did you wouldnt want to advertise it as we know both of them are illegal.
and the bog zorst what is the go with that. heyi have a straihgt through but what the hell is the go with the 10 inch chrome tip hey a smaller one that is jsut a bit larger than the outlet is nice but some people jsut go overboard.
there is one green lancer getting around my area that i know is stock as a rock besides amuffler and this huge outrageous body kit i just wanna line him up and show him what old skool celica is made of .

What a funny thread...
Anyway, I don't drive a rice box and don't want to because I'd hate to be labelled a ricer.
However, if I was a ricer, I could just about get any kinda pussy lying about in the back seat.
Lots of girls hate fast cars but they like the 'look' of cars they are in.
My girlfriend, if she had the money, would love to buy my MK3 a BIG bodykit to make it LOOK NEWER and POWERFUL, and some chromes and then put stickers on the side.
There's this 300ZX with a HUGE bodykit and spoiler...HUGE exhaust and spoiler to match, and nice 17" chromes. This thing is non turbo but everytime we happen to drive past the thing she gets me to slow down.
Main reason why I would NEVER do the outside of my car is because there are low lives that key cars, and do anything to make ur car look shit.
My car had a new black reddish pearl paintjob and I think about 3 months after I got it done, I got it keyed 3 times in a week in different locations.
When I find a 1JZ in good condition, I'm gonna drop that in but in the mean time...I wanna drop in another engine then get my stereo happening.
Is a stereo rice??? I read somewhere where people say it is. Anyway, I don't think it is. I remember driving a Camry around with 2 15" and I was shaking the windows and panels of a 180SX next to me.
Each to their own, all I know is looks gets the girls wanting a ride. ooohhh...I remember one time my mate (He has a rice box of a Lancer) and he made me drive his car coz my car was at home to get us maccas. I swear, there was like 15 hot chicks asking me all at once to drive them down the road and stuff and to top it off the sexy chick at maccas drive through was saying how nice my car was and if she wasn't working, she'd wanna come for a cruise...and this was with me not saying anything.
All I got in my MK3 was a wave from this chick and these girls staring at me then following me.
I drove that POS lancer for 5 minutes and ooooooooh man, I could have banged anyone of those in return for a passenger seat in the thing.
Anyway, moral of the story is...............to some guys, they are more concerned with speed (SOME) and other guys would rather a NICE looking car to attract the chicks....and it works!!!
There this guy with a NA MK4 Supra...canary yellow, big bodykit and spoiler....plates RNBLVR or some gay crap like that. He's a real skinny faggot...but my mates sister droools over him, but that was since she knew he drove that car. And she goes 'I know he's ugly but he's got a sexy car'
WHAT DOES THAT SAY?????????
Have a good day.

Sorry I'm just bored atm. Just taking a break from studying for exams and thought I may as well jump in. Interesting to read the responses tho.
The good old rice debate. Probably one of the most talked about issues on car forums.
Something to remember is that everyone is different! People have different tastes, personalities, forms of expressions etc. If everyone was the same or shared the same views, how boring would our lives be Lucky we live in a relatively free world that permits independant thought and expressions
Same applies to cars. People have different tastes. Some people like a clean looking original celica. Some like their cars with big wheels, over-the-top bodykit and clear tail lights. What some people think looks crap is what others think is fully sick (great). We are all car lovers however our expressions are different, no need for hate on either side.
While I’m writing here I may as well bring in another analogy. What about David Beckham’s hair cut? Now that fits into the description of rice! But if he wants to look like that then that’s cool, it’s his hair. Just like other’s that have crazy bodykits on their cars, it is their car.
Btw I don’t own a “rice” car or have ever owned one. No mags, no exhaust tip, no gauges, no bodykits .... completely stock besides the engine. If ricers didn’t exist I would have no fun at all lining them up and beating them. If everyone was driving sleepers it would be pretty boring.
So the moral?
Enjoy your car and build it how YOU want, not how others want it.

toyrota: i was going to fibreglass as much of my car (TA23) when i can, and even carbon fibre some panels when i get the tools ... but yeah, it will be for weight only, not loox or aerodynamics
Also, once i have the moulds, if I bend my car (read: when) then i can easily make a new panel, It will just have to remain ipswich grey until i can afford the paint

G'day,
A quick insight into alot of the younger peoples rice tendencies. I am a High school teacher so i always get stuck talking bout cars with kids. Alot of them have a car bought for them - or are helped to buy one. Parents have a big say in what they get - and who wants their kid in a fast car or one that breaks down? These kids are the same as us - want something different, can't have expensive performance mods - so get a kit. in most cases this is much cheaper and they are allowed to have it.
I give them heaps bout their rice cars though!!!
Besides some of you probably reckon my car is a bit ricey - checker plate door inserts & floor mats, 15in subs etc. But i built the car for ME and with my boosted twin turbo and 1100kg.... i reckon bring it on. ( not that this is a my car is the fastest call - it definately isn't).

Old and not fast, reliable, why don't they all own old corolla's? Seriously, that was my first car. It was a trooper too. Plus they are pretty forgiving, the kids can learn about cars and work on them themselves.

I'd get a kick (if I had the finances) out of building a "rice" car that actually had over-the-top "go". It's become a cliche that having a body kit Civic or Lancer means you have only mild performance mods. If you had a genuine Lancer Evo, you would be pissed off with so many pretenders around. I'd like to see one of those "Cyber" type CRX's re-engineered to mid engine RWD a'la Giocattolo. A 2JZ would nicely fill the rear seats, with a huge front mount intercooler!
