You might have an air bubble in your cooling system.

Don't know whether this will help, but I had the same problem in a blue top 4AGE. I managed to trace it the oil that I was using. So now I don't recommend Valvoline to anyone!

yeah, i'd get it tuned first, it will make a big difference!!!

And Valvoline??? I wouldn't recommend it, they use to many filler in there oil, i've heard of some engine not making it past 50,000 k's on Valvoline!!!

I use Castrol GTX2 or 3.

Sprinter boy, have you got the standard intercooler, piping etc. If you have a larger intercooler and piping as I do, the tuning will make no difference. Mine did the same thing on the standard computer and the Haltech and no matter what I did nothing worked. Zero throttle maps, different idle control motors, anti-stall valves, different tuners, no luck and I can assure you I have no leaks. Does it cut out when you rev it then let it come back down to an idle? I have had this problem for years and I've finally solved it. If your problems sound similar PM me and I'll send you some photos of howto fix

yes it sounds familiar, whern i start is it will rev for a few seconds then it will start to idle low and eventually it will cut of when i start it again it will rev up then go back down and cut of when i rev it between 1 and 2 rpm the rev is not cdonstant it will just rev up and down above 3 rpm the rev is constant i dont think i have any boost leaks as well pls help dude thanx

i have microtech ecu and supra front mount and 2.5 inch piping

I think its a pretty common problem for a 4ag to have...there's always someone on here saying they have a idle problem with there 4ag.

This is not just a small idle problem it is a real pain! Makes the car almost impossible to drive. I've been told by many experts that it is the tuning but this is not true. If I bypass the intercooler, put a hose from charger to intake runs fine. Is this the case with yours Sprinterboy?

Freak i would drain and refill your cooling system, do all the proper 'bleed' techniques to ensure you dont have air in the system.
also check you TPS settings.

Damo, how did you fix the problem of the erratic GZE idling?

I have the same problem at present. When it's cold it's all over the place and on the beginning of the drive it kangaroos if it's really cold. It also seems to surge at strange times unless it's warm. When it finally gets warm, it idles sort of okay, then pops every now and then.

I thought it was something to do with the muffler not being restrictive enough.

air in coolant or no muffler will not do it for those who think air in coolant will im sure it wont, as ive started and ran cars without coolant many times (for a very short period of time mind you).
one question i ask you is do you have an aftermarket pulley on the supercharger? if so it probably means your no longer running a clutch therefor the supercharger is always on making it VERY difficult to obtain a good idle even with aftermarket computer as this is the case with my car, it still doesnt idle when cold.

from experience i always find that idle problems ( in particulr hunting) can/are cause by dirty throttle bodies, take it off and clean it really well in all it's internal air galleries this has solved several of my idle problems

Good idea JDM hachi! I'll be pulling mine appart and cleaning it all out, and cleaning all the sensors too.

And no EVOSTi, I'm running a bog stock GZE with a 135mm pulley (not by choice, that'll change soon) I see your point about running a different s/c pulley, but it wouldn't make any difference running a different crank pulley would it?

I'll let you guys know if cleaning the throttle body out has any effect on how it runs.

??? That sucks.
Maybe I'll try and get the error codes out of the ECU and go from there.
I do know it used to run pretty good a year ago. Maybe somethings rattled loose.

I reckon we should all run round our motors with a can of WD40 and spray on every conceivable joint and pipe and see if that has any effect.

On a lighter side, I was taking the gearbox out last night, and holding up the motor by the engine hook near the intercooler, as I was getting the hoist to take the weight, I heard that distinctive sound of metal fins being crushed by the hook.
So lets hope I didn't poke a hold in my intercooler! (Fingers crossed!)

if your car ran well before, and now it doesn't it looks to be the throttle body, like i said before it solved my problem, idle control cant work if the internal galleries (which are alternately open and shut by the idle control solenoid) are blocked. im willing to bet FLYNSX a sixpack on this one!, i have an evo lancer front mount and 12psi pulley, with the standard map sensor computer, it now runs fine.
to properly clean the throttle body you must take it off the engine, the reason it gets dirty is through all the crank case blow by gases entering the inlet before the throttle, carrying with it a bit of oil, this oil will build up and eventually block internal passages casusing the affore mentioned idle problem. good luck.

matt.

So what do you clean it with? Degreaser? noooo...!
What about metho, or kero, or thinners? Or how about wax and grease remover?
Hmmmm....any suggestions?

I wish you bet me a six pack as I bought a new throttle body and no change. It's got to do with intake piping diameter and length. Maybe my problem was not the same as all you guys as my intercooler is a bit too large but whatever you've mentioned in this thread and more I've tried it with no luck.

I used to think weird idling problems came from small manifold vacuum leaks.
I'm yet to actually find out if that is the cause of misbehaving EFI motors, but I read a magazine article that some guy swears blind that you can track these things down with a can of WD40 to try and find even the smallest vacuum leak.
after finding the leak, all it requires a new gasket.

FLYNSX, have you tried replacing yall our manifold and intake gaskets? Or do you think the problem is to do with your front mount intercooler only?

Re: gze idle problem Thu, 05 June 2003 07:15 Go to previous messageGo to next message
what i said in regards to upgraded pulley was only relevant if it was a pulley on the supercharger, not crank. as far as i know a bigger crank pulley shouldnt affect idle.
cleaning the throttle body is a good idea as the do tend to get full of oil on gze's quite easy.
and about leaks around the manifold, this would only be relevant if you are running a AFM gze. if your running map sensor, having an air leak SHOLDNT make any difference wahtsoever as it hasnt read the air intake yet as it does it in the manifold.
with different intercoolers and the like i cant really comment on that i spose it could affect idle although i cant see how.
those of you running front mounts on sprinters can someone please send me some pics!? preferably of the piping exiting the supercharger or the pipes going past the radiator (if still using a stock radiator). im still having trouble workimg out how to do mine!

Flynsx I've got a flange with pipe welded to it to suit a gze throttle body which you can place directly onto the intake manifold when you remove the intercooler piping. Unplug the supercharger and start it up. If it idles (which I'm SURE it will) then you can rule out tuning etc etc. If you need it let me know and I'll send it to you
