my mate in his JZZ30 soarer raced a manual jza80 n/a and it was dead even except the start where the supra got ahead a little then the soarer caught it and was basically neck and neck.
this was at the drag strip of course

im not too good with the codes man ! sorry
OK general consensus is that the TT will be quicker... what about on a twisty road - id say the sooppra will win it there ?
and what bout the prices ? reckon 15 k for a soarer is reasonable / doable ?
KoffeeBlack - ur supra is the bomb !

Don't know if the prices have dropped, but I was helping a friend look at Soarers about a year ago and a cheap (ie: nasty) one back then was about $20k.
Unless you want to do the importing yourself. Then you should be able to get it for $15k.

A Soarer TT should kill a Supra NA. 206kW vs 163kW... cars weigh virtually the same, handling is virtually identical since they are based on the same floorpan and use the same suspension setup.

Even though I still think the auto TT Soarer may have it in a straight line, don't discount the NA Supra like that.
Sure it has "only" 168kW. It doesn't weigh the same as the Soarer. Manual Mk4 SZ weighs about 1450kg, thats at least 100kg less than the Soarer. I couldn't find an exact figure off hand, but I'm pretty sure the difference is actually more than that.
As for the handling, I think the handling would be better in the Mk4 SZ, same sort of suspension, but less weight. They have the same brakes too.
Anyways, I think that covers it. Later

I haven't driven either car, but I'd be surprised if the handling was the same. These cars were built with different roles in mind - the Supra is a sports coupe, while the Soarer is a luxury cruiser. That being the case I would expect the Supra to have sharper handling and the Soarer to have a smoother ride.

the supra handles nicely... and yes, the tt soarer should spank it.
as has been said, it depends if you buy one from a car lot here, or get one imported through an importer.
the difference will usually be $5k+, but that's the risk you take not actually getting to see it.

id agree in putting my dollars on the Supra thru the bends and the Soarer Straight line
Supra IS a sportscar - is designed to handle and respond to those conditions - whereas the Soarer is more of a Grand tourer - brisk but not as precise.. The TT would have it ina straight line with obvious power advantages
Id still have an NA supra over one though

I have thought - import vs domestic car and I think that I might actually go for a non import for a few reasons. Insurance, parts, repairs, servicing etc...
Might consider a 98ish 200SX, what are your views in terms of looks, performance, ease of modifications, and of course insurance?

An NA Supra insurance will be cheaper to insure than a 200sx.
I pay $2000/annum, Im 21, living in Sydneys West! I have had no insurance before hand either. I have told the insurers about every mod I have done so far.
But yeah, even tho its a Nissan, I dont mind the S14a, there are alot of aftermarket bits already, and they look very nice. The SR20DET respond well to small mods, such as a full exhaust gaining about 10kwatw

I'm one for imports
Insurance isn't too bad if you shop around, I pay $2400/p.a. for my Soarer TT, and I'm 18, living in East Sydney. I did have previous insurance but that was under my parents (with NRMA) but my car is under another insurer.
The S14a is a nice car, I like them a lot, but to me paying for one could be used into buying something like an R33 GTS25t, JZZ30 Soarer or a JZA80 Supra.
I love the look of the Supra, however I wanted space with power, and nothing comes close to the balance of space and power like the Soarer True, the Soarer is the grand tourer out of the two, but that was one of the reasons why I bought one

If your prepared to do a lot of searching you will get a good one for $15,000 in Australia. I looked at about 30 over a few days in Melbourne. Some were really bad, no paint, crook engines...etc and high prices and some were not too bad condition and cheaper. I couldn't understand it myself.
Mine was in the condition of most of the 16-17 grand ones in car yards and I payed a LOT less than $15,000 for mine. I thought to myself if the engine did blow up as soon as I bought it replacement engines now days are cheap (HPI magazine quote "a lot cheaper than a replacement falcodore engine" (or there abouts...not too good at quotes.) and I could put one of those in and still have change.
I guess mine has passed the innitial test and have driven it 9,000 k's since i've had it with no problems at all except for badly scrubbing out tyres...new tyres to slicks in 4000k's before a quick trip to Beaurepairs. Problem fixed now.
But one big problem....even though I have spent less than my sister did on her Excel, people don't repect that I worked my ass off through school & uni to get a job so I can pay for a car I love and now I've had a nice Mr or Mrs Dickhead come along and key scratch almost all panels. Makes you wonder...some people!!

Oh and KOFFEE-BLACK...i'm with you...it's scary how my 1992 model car compares to my parents 2001 Commodore and a friends 1996 Skyline with quality. Just amazing. Especially the Commodore.
I wanted my parents to either buy a Soarer or a Chaser. They said they were crap. The day I got mine I got mum to take it for a drive. She pulled up and said to dad..."Why didn't we get one of these". ha ha ha

Well, I've got an '95 model auto and raced a '95 manual last weekend. Let's just say that I was the one smiling at the end
Gotta practice launches a lot in a turbo cos you either end up bogging down or sit there spinning the rears. Mind you, I still love the manual, so much better on bendy bits of road and you are in 'control' of the car. That said, the auto is a magical piece of work in the Soarer. I have never driven an auto as good as this before. Commodore/Falcon autos are complete crap compared to the Toyota box.

*grumbles about his sloppy clunky supra auto box*
Cant wait for manual-fication
That said
You could probably import a soarer cheaper than a supra...

Les,
The Soarer TT auto has to be one of the most relaxing car I've ever driven, as most I wanted a manual but couldn't find one at a good price so I settled for an automatic, nice quick car for the weight and size. Never tried a manual Soarer TT through the twisties before, but for me the Soarer auto is capabale more than enough.
Simon,
I've been trying to look for the perfect launch RPM for the auto Soarer, I think the best one so far was around 2600~2700RPM, below that it bogs down, above that the rears light up and the tail slides out

If you are in sydney, go to a place called delux motors just near warwick farm. They have a green soarer there at the moment. It is where i got mine from. The guys were really great there as well, not dicks. They fixed the little bump on the bumper before i picked it up, and even held it for me for almost 3 weeks while the problems with my loan got worked out. Just don't go in and expect to drive it straight away, they will tell you where to go and stick it.

Are these things optional or standard on the 2.5 TT model?
electric seat (not leather). does it normally come in non electric ?
climate control?
is the digi dash on 91 model the same as one in a 95 model ?
hole in the top of the car (forget what it is called!!)
are the interiors different or all standard ?? i.e. are there options to get woodgrain, leather on the trims ? i think the one i saw was leather...
thanks guys

Electric seats - Optional
Climate control - Standard I believe
Digi dash - Same across all models BUT "L" models (GT-T L, Limited, etc) have a scrolling display at the bottom where you can read more info.
Sunroof - Optional
Interiors - All TT models came with velour seats (no leather). Some importers change the seats to leather, so it is possible to find them.
Depending on car model, you can get either plastic or woodgrain.

Thanks Les.
I picked mine up nearly 2 years ago with 90,000km on the clock. It's a 1995 model so I think the mileage is actually genuine (unlike some of the 1991 models I see with 30,000km on them).
I got it for just under $30k when the going price at the time for a '95 model was $40-$45k.
I have never regretted the purchase.

Les,
This is the way I've seen Soarer features...
Remember that there are two variants of the Soarer TT, the GT-t and the GT-TL, however Simon's basically summed it up.
- Electric Seats: Don't think it was available on the GT-t, standard on the GT-TL
- Climate Control A/C: Standard
- Digi Dash: Difference between GT-t and GT-TL
- Sunroof: Optional on all (woo hoo I've got one )
- Leather: N/A, unless swapped with seats from a UZZ31/2
The 1JZ is an awesome engine, apart from the CT12 turbos, they're indestructible! I'm not sure about all Toyota engines, but as an example my parents used to have an 88 Tarago and we sold that with about 300K on the clock and it didn't miss a beat. My Soarer's got about 114000 on the clock now, still runs fine, just needs a service soon
Check out this link for more info, hope it helps you out.
