CV Boot Replacement Mon, 26 May 2003 04:44 Go to next message
Does anyone know of a nice (cheap) place to replace my CV Boots??

I just noticed a crack in my passanger side one and it has lost a little bit of grease which I can see in on the guard. They are pretty old anyway so I need doing.

So I have like all these doctors bills from my knee reconstruction, and I need to get it done before I hurt my joints, that is, CV Joints. Smile me so funny.

So if you can recommend a nice cheap place I will be there in a flash. I don't don't think I have the expertise to do it myself, so I will pay anyone to do it.

(I have to put my new 5th gear in too!)

i'd say get a Gregory's manual or something for your car, and have a good read up on that about replacing CV boots. i've heard for my camry (different car i know, but still FWD) it is not necessarily difficult but time consuming. perhaps try going to a wreckers that you can take the parts off your self (Pick and Payless, they still around?) and try doing it on one of their junked cars?

I spoke to my boss from the servo where I work. He reckoned that it would take about 1.5 hours per boot (external boots).

The actual replacing of the boot is a piece of piss.....except for getting the inner side of the new boot around where it goes.....thats a bit of a bitch....u need a good position

but the rest...hmmm

hmmm....im trying to remember what u gotta take off to get to it....i think u just have to get the disc off the shaft and thats it isnt it ?

yeah if u can just get the disc off the shaft u should be sweet....and obviously take the wheel off too

so yeah get the DISC off the CV shaft by undoing the nut and bolt from the strut....remember which way the nut & bolt face....the nut should be on the right hand side....looking at the car from the side i think

also zip tie both ends of the boot

try not to ge the multi-fit boots as they suk to get on

Anyone wanna correct me ?

pretty easy to do,get the drive shaft out of the car.... Hit the end of the cv out and pull the old rubber out, Put the new boot on and place the metal zip ties things on and there is a special tool to tighten them and cut them off. Pretty easy, hardest bit is getting the driveshafts out of the car !!! Cool

Thanks for the help! I am a little aprehensive about getting the shafts out, as I have never done that before. Everything else seems a cinch.

Anyway I am taking it to my servo where I work (1 day a week as a console... soo degrading I know... Smile ), and am going to ask to watch them.

I can't be to difficult. Once I know, I know forever. It is only my outside boot as well, even easier. Thx for the help, totally appreciated - Rob

Just for price comparison, so you know if you're getting a good deal or not from your servo, I got quotes for a CV boot replacement myself the other week. Two quotes at about $120-130, 3rd quote at $75 (parts & labour). All in Thornleigh. Note that this was for one CV boot only. PM me if you want more details.

Hey Tony,

Just up in Thornleigh! Wow, $75 is nothing! My boss reckoned that it would take 1.5 hours to do, so I am assuming with an aftermarket boot that brings the price in at about $125.00 ($77 per hour).

I only want to see them do it once, and I will be set, and I am thinking the only way that I will get to see it is if I do it where I work.

Thanks so much for the advice. PM 4 u

Ok here is the final update.

Boss charged me $133.35. That is a lot of money, especially considering I work there. $80 for the labour, $38 for the boot and $14.85 for the oil.

He should be ashamed of himself.

do you think that price would be the usual price, or still a discount? i need to get one of mine done and trying to get an idea of the cost.

That was the absolute MAX I was imagining spending. I don't think it would have been more expensive if I had gone to a Mercedes dealer.

Well. Maybe not, but look at Tony's post above and the quotes he got.

Definitely no discount for me. Sad Employee and everything.

i am a aprentice machenic and i have to say cv boots are easy, just pull your wheel off , undo the split pin and nut in the centre of the hub . then undo the three bolts on the bottom of your lowre control arm.pry your lower control arm down and pull your rotor and strut out of the way then pull the drive shaft out and pull the uni joint off pull the boot off wipe it clean with a rag put the new boot on with lots of grease do the clips up then put it back together

that's the way I saw it done last time I watched... pulling the whole assembly down.
took almost no time, and only cost a bit over $100
