Dude, look for some MA61 rims, but if you dont need real big tyres a nicer bet would be the 15" Soarer rims because you could get better tyres for the more common 15" rims. You'd also have a littler less sidewall which is always good.
Personally, I'd be going at least 205's, possibly 215. 195's are just too small for something with that much power. Ask Nark, he drove around on stock rims and 195's for ages When you are dealing with a chassis that is 20 years old, having the extra tyre grip is going to compensate for the few years of chassis technology its going to be missing out on!

Dude, I have 235s in the back and I still get heaps of wheelspin. Having an open diff doesn't help I suppose...
I'd say go for minimum 7" (wide) rims and stick minimum 225s on them. The MA61 rims are 14x7" so they're suitable, a bit hard to find though. I tried to find a set for a year and a half before I settled on my current mags. There's also lots of sidewall on 14" rims...

Yeah, long time. Been in America for a month, my post counts sucks!
My wheels are 2" wider than stock. I'm not sure if they're legal. I don't know the weight bracket that my car falls under. When I checked the documentation, I thought I was legal. But I've had a guy tell me that they aren't when I was getting a pink slip.
Offset is no problem. As for clearance, the front used to scrub when I hit mid-corner bumps when I had 215/45R17s but I moved down to 215/40R17s and haven't had a problem since. Never had a problem with the 235/45R17 rears.

Dewd, I wasn't actually covered for the first 4 years of owning my car.
If something happens, I could always try to fit my stockers on before the insurance inspector comes......
But yeah, I'd rather break the law and have my car safer to drive than to stick to the law and have it handle like it used to...

They are the 6" wide Soarer rims, I've got 205/60R15 Bridgestone Potenza RE711's on them at the moment.
Awesome tyres, I know my car is underpowered, but it takles severe clutch dumpage, even in the wet to make my car slide at all now.
You dont like them Les???

Dewd, 205 anythings would stop the RA60 from wheelspinning...
I had 205 Kelly Chargers on my car for a while and couldn't get wheelspin in anything apart from 1st unless I dumped the clutch mid-corner...

Dude, I've talking about the wet. I used to be able to just apply a bit of throttle and my car would whack out into oversteer. I cant even be violent with the steering and the throttle to make it slide at all.
I reckon if you had 215's on the Soarer rims it'd be a nice balance between wheelspin and affordability. Providing you had nice rubber too. Quality over quantity!

i had 215 15's on the standard ra65 22re and it still was a bitch taking off from the lights in the wet, especially up a hill
im thinking IRS may have a big something to do with traction in the rear as it bogs right down when you take off
i had a auto 21rc ra60 and it had 175 tyres couldnt get it to do a burnout on grass...lol....but it chirped 2nd gear if you held it flat, that car was mental damn glad i sold it
what is the deal with your wheels in NSW ??...im pretty sure here there is no limitations

celicamad - there are limitations... i read some RTA report on wheel modifications and shit... pretty strict rules... BUT i am sure lots of people do break those rules
i am just worried that in the event of an accident, insurance may be void... in that case.. i might as well NOT buy 3rd part property if i wont get insured should I have illegal wheels on the car !

Les, if you're worried about insurance, your best bet is to contact your insurance guy. Some insurance companies have their own policies which aren't the same as the RTA's policies.

FWIW, after I'd bought my mags, I was offered a set of 5 MA61 rims (without tyres) for $200. $120 per rim is a bullshit price.
Just keep looking, they're out there... They're just really rare.

Dude, I put out heaps of feelers. Just told lots of people that I was after a set of MA61 mags...
Call around the wreckers but chances are that you won't find them at wreckers. MA61s are rare beasts.

theres a few toyota wreckers here that have them. one place wanted $330 or so for the soarer rims no tyres and another place wanted just over $200 for the ma60 wheels with tyres. I got mine from a guy i found in the trading post. he had some new mags on his car and wanted to get rid of the ma60 wheels as they were taking up precious real estate. there was a supra at the local wreckers here at some stage but the wheels had already been replaced with some shit ones. they probably knew how much they're worth.
