Power steering lines are long

Why are PS lines long? The line from the pump to the rack does an S bend and stuffs around before going to the rack. Is this to equalise pressure?
I'm getting my lines redone, and want to know if I can go straight to the pump (leaving enough room for engine flex)?

hia hkspete
the length of your p/s line are made like that from the factory
it keep the fulid a bit cooler. So it don't make to much diffence
if you make them shorter.Make shore you put reducers in the high pressure line.

they also usually take a trip to out the front of the radiator to cool down the fluid a bit...

I think I know the thing Pete is talking about, and it's not part of the P/S cooler. It's just a random S-bend in the engine bay between the pump and the cooler. I have no idea what its purpose is, but it's worth remembering that Mr Toyota doesn't put anything in his cars if it's not needed for something...

It is supposed to be a cooler - if you're getting your lines redone, why not plumb in a 'proper' core-type cooler out the front of the car? No prizes for guessing which Locally Manufactured Car uses absolutely no form of cooling on the steering - and which Locally Manufactured Car also has a tremendous reputation for rupturing seals, hoses and pumps... (I'll give you a hint - they're both the same, and both like to be thought of as a jungle animal! )

As I said above, it's NOT the P/S cooler. (This is assuming Pete is talking about what I think he's talking about.) There is a BIG S-bend in front of the radiator which is an oil cooler, but there is also a small S-bend in the corner of the engine bay which has no obvious purpose. I've looked at it before and wondered WTF it's there for, but again I'm sure it was put there for a reason.

Yes, Norbie your right. The line I'm talking about is the S bend that goes around right next to the actual PS pump. There would be little cooling effect there ('specially with the turbo/exhaust being so close!).
Its the line that goes from the bottom of the pump (the pressure line) to the rack. Thats why in my first post I thought it would be a pressure equaliser of some sort.
I think at the moment I'll see if I can get it made to go straight to the rack, if not, then I'll get the S bend re-done.
It still does go through the front of the engine, so it'll be cooled there.

its a cooler pipe as it adds to the volume that can be held that is why it is there
