Removing dirt/mud from inside sill panel Wed, 28 May 2003 06:12 Go to next message
Hi all, well over the last week in preperations for the drags (damn can't believe they were canceled!) i've spent a lot of time under the Celica, changing diffs etc..

Anyway, as usual when working on your car you find things you wish you didn't, like a hole in the inside rear wheel arch leading directly into the sill panel.

Only about the size of a 50cent piece, and in a very easy spot to fix thank god. Being inside the wheel arch means no spray painting either ... But...

When I stuck my finger in there I can feel heaps of mud and dirt sitting in the bottom of the sill panel. All wet as well, probably from this non-stop rain we've been having lately.

I don't want to weld up the hole before I get some of the crap out of the sill, if not it'll all just sit there and rust it away eventually.

Wanted to pick peoples brains for ways to get it out. There are a series of drag holes/plugs along the bottom of the sill, but only small so cannot really get anything into them to dislodge the dirt out. I was thinking maybe filling it up with water through the rust hole, then open up all the drain holes and hopefully the water will carry the dirt out? Then fill it up with fish oil/rust preventitive? Maybe get an air compressor in there and try to blow it out?

Whats everyones ideas?

Many thanks
Joel

Can you get in through the boot. The best would be with compressed air. i had exactly the same problems with my sprinter but it is easy to get the mud out when i have taken the rear quarter off.

Yeah try and blow it out.....but dont get the compressor in there as it wont fit.....try and attach a hose to the compressor and use that to blow the crap out... as this will work much better

seriously though if u give it enough air u proabably wont even have to wash the dirt out.....but washing the dirt out is a good idea

how about putting when blowing it out....seal the hole your blowing through so more of the crud and dirt gets "forced" out of the drain plugs ???

Thanx

Your main problem is going to be you'll pritty much just blow the mud/dirt down the sil and wont really get any of it out. You'd be much better off trying to get it out the hole that it went in.

ie, try using your compressed air through the drain holes, although I don't see that working.

Alternativly, remove the seat belt on that side and the plate that it's bolted too, this should give you access into the sill cavity, you may be able to remove the gunk that way, the access isn't too bad, I used it to panelbeat out the sil back to the right shape after an "incident".

or hell, if your going to weld it up anyway, cut a bigger hole and scrape it out.

good luck

Al
