ok, I think i know the answer, but is there a secret trick to removing the 1jz wiring?
the only option I can see at the moment is to pull off the inlet manifold... and ideally I'd like to avoid that if it's not necessary

Have you removed the fuel rail?
On most toyota engines the loom will come out, albeit with some persuasion, once you remove the fuel rail.
Good luck.

my problem is I dont want to remove *all* of it. I just want to remove most.
I had a go at drawing some of the wires through (like the no6 injector, which is closest to the end I was pluuing from) but as I thought, they're too tightly packed/twisted to be pulled out like that

I guess I should have simply said that the harness looks impossible to remove without removing the intake manifold, thus we removed it whilst still attached to the manifold.

that's what I thought
I've got a manifold+harness sitting on the floor of my garage, and it looked difficult, to say the least
