i have been reading this for a while and wanted to see if any one has actually tried it. has any one ever tried to swap a 5mge crank and rods into a 7mgte block and pistons. to make it a more "square"engine seeing how the 7mgte has a 83x91mm stroke with the 5m crank and rods it would give it a 83x83mm stroke. just wondering if any one has tried this before to shed some light on it. thanks sam

I can't say I have done it.
Post 84 5MGEs and the 7MGE/GTE run the same bearings.
Definitely doable but you'll need to play with the rods and pistons to get the right combo for the deck height.
Like Ed said, it's just a 5MGE with 24 valves and oil squirters. One of the attractive things about the 7M is the wads of low down torque - you'll lose some of that with the shorter stroke and drop in capacity.

i actualy fiddled with a few engine parameters once on a desktop dyno... you lose the torque, and you do gain considerable revs. but with that, the power and torque bands go up... BUT strangely, despite revving more, the lower capacity and shorter stroke NEVER managed to regain the absolute torque and power figures of the original 7m setup.
pity the 7m just doesnt rev little better - hen it would be an absolute screemer... gues tht why they changed the bore and rod legth and created the 2jz...
cheers
