Sorry the title makes me laugh
I just wanted to find out people's views on front wheel drive cars.
Personally i hate them i mean my missus has one thats ok shes a girl and wouldnt know what to do with a rwd anyway (ie sideways action)
But to see guys proud of doing up there fwd seems very sad to me - havent these people drove in the wet with a rwd car, that is something a fwd can never do......... hang it sideways.
im sure some of you will disagre

Not everyone is interested in "sideways action". Hell, the vast majority of people aren't interested in cars full stop. I'm no fan of FWD cars myself, but they have their place.

It makes me sad that a lot of the smaller fwd cars could be awesome machines with rwd. fwd is the sort of thing that happens when bloody accountants are allowed to make business decisions.

That's funny, cause me and my mate with an SX Corolla were just talking about this tonight. I was saying that my next car would be a RWD or Four Wheel Drive, but I have a few reasons that I still like my front wheel drive.
For a long time, generally speaking, rally cars (which, yes, I classify as the best form of racing, combining the hightest quality driving and strongest machine engineering) were FWD till Four WD came in and beat them. In real (rally) driving, RWD just doesn't cut it. This is because in FWD you have a great ability to pull yourself through corners (instead of risking a slide you just plant it) and you can power out and keep control much easier. RWD one just has to be a little more careful in such situations, hence their no-show action in the rally world. Similar principles apply anywhere though.
But if you are a city boy and like the old burn out or two, a bit of slippage exiting a round-about, then you must buy a RWD, and I don't blame you. I don't drive RWD very often, so honestly, I can't say everything, and I KNOW that RWD drivers love their RWD cars. Is it a complex?

If it came down to a performance situation, I wouldn't even think about FWD. I've got a preference for RWD, although RWD biased 4WD and systems like the GTR and EVO are great in my opinion. 4WD tend not to have as close to 50:50 weight distribution due to the extra drivetrain though.
FWD has stuff that the other two will never be able to achieve to the same extent. FWD cars usually have better use of the wheelbase in terms of interior space, and they don't have a transmission tunnel running down the middle. Therefore in that role, FWD cars own. They are also usually biased towards understeer which is "safer" for people who don't want to drive hard and they don't tend to get into those "oh look, there's the tail" situations.
I don't see me in the near future owning a FWD car, but they definetly have their place.

Hi,
I noticed that rally car cars were discussed in this thread. Well, Lancia Stratos, Ford Escort, Metro V8, Datsun 1600, Datsun anything.... , etc........
But FWD do have there place, just not in my driveway!!!

I think you'll find fwd has never been competitve with rwd or 4wd in rally cars. fwd cars have only ever been competitve in the restricted classes biased towards fwd.

fwd was implemented into cars simply to keep production costs down. By keeping all of the gear together it was easier to produce the cars cheaply.
There are no doubt some awesom fwd cars around, its just that i like to be pushed not pulled

Well..
I personally don't care who won what, I was just observing. There have been some fantastic RWD Rally cars, like the Stratos and the Escort. They were very hard to beat for few years. But prior to them there was very little activity in the RWD camp. After the Escort, 4WD really took over with a few FWD exceptions turning in some good performances like the Peugot 306 Maxi in '96 (oh, and the Renault Megane Maxi too). While RWD in the 90's have dropped off the planet all together. Really in the last 15 years RWD haven't held a candle to anything. Maybe if we lived in the 80s RWD would be king, but not today I am afraid. The Cosworth in the early 90s proving the only exception that I can think of.
Better traction, better setup into corners. When you power in a RWD, it wants to go out, which is fun, but doesn't help you go faster..... anyway.. enough about all that...

not that i'm a bogan or into burnouts or anything, but here is a good argument against FWD
picture a front wheel drive car doing a stationary burnout.
i have always had an irrational hate of FWD, i woulldnt ever own one unless it was free, and produced a 6 pack every week.
mind you, i will never own a V6 either, but that is a different story.
they have their place, and its one of these:
reverse doughnuts (look really cool, bye bye CV joints)
delivery car
shopping trolley
(yeah, ok. rally car - but thios is only because you can make a FWD lighter than a RWD)
etc.
on the point of the stratos, looks cool (but has a V6 so that counts aganst it) i'm not too keen of mid/rear engined cars either, i dont think i would have the patience for a car that wasn't essentially self correcting.
TOYOTA, BRING BACK TEH AE86 pl34s3!!
oh yeah, and the honda s2000 is damn cool, imagine if more of their cars were RWD.

The S2000 is an overpriced, under-performing POS. There are far superior cars at half the price.
The fact that Honda only make FWDs (apart from one RWD supercar) shows in the crap rear end suspension tuning on the S2000. Imagine paying $80k for a car that wouldn't grip if you changed the rear tyres! Or the fact that you'd get beaten at the lights by $40k cars like the 200SX and WRX!

yeah being a FWD driver i see no advantages compared to RWD but i dont mind, still like my car. next car will be a RWD for shure but.
i think s2000 heaps awshum but its been critisised for gears that do not make the most of its power curve. maybe thats why it cant compete with turbo 2l cars half its price.

It's a lot harder to get a fwd smoking than a rwd.

thats a bit contradictive mate
all cheap front wheel drives not only look like crap stock they also go like crap.
at least with a rwd you can go and get sideways out bush do a decent burnout and lap doughnuts
what more could you want form a cheap rwd?

Exactly - the only FWD car i think that had any credit of late were the Peuegot 205's in the F2 class - cause they were killers in the tarmac rallys - get them on the other conditions - and the AWD's would eat them up - and spit them out
the ones mentioned above are the ones speak about in classic rally - and if youve ever driven a rs2000 thats rally prepared - youd definantly see it had the right stuff to keep up there
As for front wheel drive overall - I dont like them - I dont like the idea of traction and Steering being on the same setup - i dont like the idea of having absolutely no chance of recovering from a tailslide if things get messy - At least with rwd you can correct and power out
After riding in CeLiCa's FWD 3sgte st184 - i found yes they do accelletate and pull off the mark hard - but F*** me if i was to have that in the wet ! vety good car in the dry but i really REALLY would prefer my gt4 - or old ta22 if things get a little slippery

this thread is an example of the negative side of an on-line community
toymods over the years has established itself a reputation for being informative, helpful and understanding to all aspects of toyota, yet someone can come in off the street with no credibility, and start a thread and argument that doesnt represent the views of toymods...
now someone else might come off the street and see this thread, they might have valuable contributions to make but are scared away from doing this because of a slack jawed one sided thread...
i really hope this thread is locked down and sent to the bottom of the forums...

FWIW...
Take a look at the Higher-end luxury/sports cars going around. (ie. those that concentrate on form/function over price considerations). You'll find that, almost to the last car, they are RWD or AWD. A notable exception is the Volvo and Saab products, although I think they are biased to the Safety market (ie. less "spirited" driving with a tendency to understeer etc).
I had the FWD Vs RWD debate with my father some years ago (he drove a Mitsubishi Verada then; drives a V6 Vectra now), he came down on the side of the FWDs. (I laughed at him... all in good spirits, mind you!)
As for me, I have 2 cars, both Toyotas, both running non-standard engines, and both RWD...
I just think that driving, suspending AND steering is too big an ask.
Additionally, FWD was introduced for no other reason than economics. ie. they are cheaper to produce. It was NOT a question of a performance benefit, which it isn't.
My 2c.

its like arguing the point that v8s are shit, or rotors are shit. they are different variants of the same thing. like MR cars, they are in essence FWD but reversed.
you cant argue that rwd are better, or the FWD are better, you can just put your views accross.. and saying that only girls drive FWD cars just shows how blid yu are to the variety that is around.
everyone has own taste, dont put shit on people for not likeing what you do...
