Late-model W58's (ie JZA80/JZZ30 boxes) are internally different to the earlier ones. They have closer ratios and double-row synchros on 2nd and 3rd. I've heard they are slightly stronger as well but I have yet to confirm this. They also come with an external shifter but it's easy to convert them to internal using parts from an early W58.

Not so, according to someone I know who pulled an early and late W58 apart at the same time...

It's being built as we speak... I'm picking it up this afternoon and the car should be back on the road tomorrow.
It turns out the friction plate got twisted due to a massive compression lockup I did not long after I got the car running (ie accidentally dropped it back to 2nd at 100km/h), which explains the weird vibration... so that's getting fixed as well. I'm looking forward to having a smooth running car that can actually get its power to the ground!
