Hello everyone,
i've been interested in supercharging a 7mge, and thought you guys would know the most about this.
First off, can this be done (without spending over $2000)
and secondly would it be hard to do. i know there is the 7mgte and the 1jz, but i was more looking at a cheap way of getting more power without doing a conversion.
if there are any sites you know of (cause i can't find any) that have some information on this subject could you please post it?
Thanks.

What setup do you intend to run for under $2k?

Everyone is going to say the same thing, just buy a 7mgte.

Otherwise you will need a whole new engine management system, which will be at least $1k + tuning

Then the cost of the supercharger and plumbing are you going to run an intercooler?

And is all the work going to be performed by yourself or will you be adding a labour component to blow the figure out of the water.

Sit down write up the figures and be realistic, not wanting to dampen your enthusiasm towards it, just dont get halfway through and realise that its going to cost twice as much and be 4 times harder than swapping in a 7mgte.

I can't see you doing it for $2k. For starters, where are you going to find a large enough supercharger? SC12's and SC14's can be had cheaply, but they're not big enough. After that things start getting expensive. Sad

I agree with the above, get a 7M-GTE. Bang-for-your-buck it's the best option, and it would be heaps easier to do than a custom SC setup.

I have no idea, i was asking if it was possible.

i don't really want to do a conversion, but how much would it cost for the 7mgte conversion?
as far as i know a 7mgte costs about $1500 then i've got to pay for labour and all the other extras, so i thought the final price would be over $2500+, is this about right.
By the way the car would be an MX83 Cressida.

Well if you get an engine package for $1500 i assume you will be staying auto.

The engine will bolt straight in. But thereis going to be expenses of much more than $1000 especially if you want someone else to do it for you.

You will need:

intercooler: $300-$400
Plumbing for intercooler $300-$400
Dump pipe and exhaust $300-$1000 depending on how much is done.
Flywheel reground $??
Pay someone to wire up the engine $900 im guessing (sideshow perhaps)
New air filter $100-$200
Replace belts, filters, oils $200

oh and the actually pulling out and swapping over of engines as well will be charged at labur rates.

The rule of thumb is conversions are not cheap!

thanks for the prices.
But with the $5000+ for the conversion, wouldn't i be able to spend all that on supercharging the original 7m and preparing the engine for more power (as budget permits).
Plus i would love to have the supercharger on it for a bit of originality.
I guess from your's and norbies responses that it would be hard to find a supercharger to put on the 7m, but there has to be one out there.........right Embarassed(could you point me in the right direction(if you know what direction that is))
And in the long run, i do plan to go manual, but that will be another "when i get the money" thing.

Thats where i originally got the idea from..
i saw the site and thought, "hmmm, that's pretty original, would probably be quite nice to drive too, plus nobody else would have one."

Well the supercharger setup will cost you more to setup to begin with and you will still be running stock 7mge internals.

Expect for the price to jump as soon as you crack the engine open. Which is more than likely what you would have to do at a certain point. It might not be in the beginning, but you may need to later on.

The beauty of the turbo is the ability to turn up the wick and extract more power when desired i guess, the supercharger on an atmo engine with a jury rigged fuel system will have limitations at a much lesser level.

If you want to do the supercharger go for it, im not going to sell you on the turbo, hell the insurance wont make much difference between the two either.

What i see is factory turbo setup or dodgey rigged supercharger on an atmo engine. Reliability is key to a good investment.

Didn't we just talk about this here? I know it was in reference to a 2JZGE but the same principles apply.

looks like everyone here (except Cyber-punk) is extremely against the idea, but what the hell, i'm still going to research this cause it really appeals to me. Smile

learn how to change an engine or just buy one already converted.
