Is premium unleaded better for the engine in terms of preservation of engine condition?
Does it actually make much difference to performance?

The peservation of an engine is all relevant to the accelerator.
Try it and find out for yourself is the best answer I can give.

Hellz yeah! I can seriously notice the difference if i have to fill up with regular unleaded. 96/98ron fuel is all i will use these days..

Normal unleaded sux,like to use 98 ron unleaded all the time but the last tank was Caltex Vortex and I noticed the difference between this and the 98ron fuels.

I use PULP only in mine.
Reluctant to go back to regular unleaded. Don't want it to ping. Standard dizzy timing too.

Yea, I've been using optimax ever since I got my car, back in 2000. But the last two fillups have been on bp ultimate. I've noticed no peformance difference between them both, but, after last fillup, I've noticed there is no more sulphur smell because it's got a lower sulphur content, but I've really just only noticed today the exhaust smells like metho. Both fills have been at the same station.

yer, it does make a diff.
B4 on ULP my 4age 100kw, would ping, on PULP or 98ron fuels it ran smoooooooth as hell. And good mielage too.

I only run Ultimate or Optimax in my 100kW 4A-GE.
It runs smoother and with a little more power. Economy is also slightly better. I figure that its a good investment.
